Is the temperament of a calf more likely to be influenced by the sire or the dam? Or is it an even mix from both? I know that other factors can play a role but I know genetics play a big role as well.

I think its a mix? seen plenty of hot tempered hairy bear yellow jacket and ext cattle, seen some baby doll sunseekers and dirty harry's.... I've seen the meanest cow in our herd heard raise the most gentle calf

I agree, it is a mixture of both.  I've had crazy cows with the calmest calves, and have also had calm calves by Flush, Heat Seeker, etc.  Also had crazy calves out of those same bulls and calm cows.

I am glad to see these comments. I have a cow that had a bull that was never worked with just fed from a bucket that you can sit on. His half brother, (a different sire), is not wild but is skiddish. You can occasionally put his shoulder if you have feed but that is it.

I'd say its 80-20 cow. Those calves are with those cows 4-5 months before weaning and that attitude really rubs off on them.
