I've searched the planet, and found nothing and googled it to no avail.  I've used it on horses with great success.  Can you use it on animals for slaughter??

:-\    I am not sure about that at all.  Call your vet and ask him.  If you are still having problems with that steer, I sure would think about taking him to Elgin Vet Clinic.  In my opinion they are the BEST!!  Dr. Warner can perform miracles when miracles are needed!!  I have the phone number if you need it!  Good Luck!!  Lisa

Good question....as it relates to horses I believe it falls under the catagory of "nutracuticals" so while it may not be approved for use in horses it isn't illegal to feed.  Not sure how it would be looked at as it relates to a beef animal.

What do you mean? We sell it at the feed store I work at for horses. Its packaged with a pic of a horse on it including feeding directions. The only bad thing about it is peopel use it to make meth so we have to keep it locked up

It's not FDA regulated...AFAIK it's not approved for use in horses but it's not restricted, kind of a gray area like most nutricuticals.  Similar to Melatonin...not approved but not restricted.  You are correct there are many companies selling MSM for horses but there is no approval for MSM in horses.

Found this on a website...says it better than I can:

Do you know the truth about MSM?
Is MSM banned by the FDA?
No. By ruling of the U.S. District Court of Oregon in July 1990, pure MSM is perfectly legal for sale and use as a dietary supplement. In fact, this ruling, which the FDA has chosen not to appeal, put to rest the uncertainty about MSM's legal status. The court stated that a food additive permit is required for the sale of products in which MSM is mixed with other nutrients. This is one of the reasons that most to the low concentration "blends' have disappeared from the marketplace. Although this ruling restricted the use of MSM in multi-nutrient formulas, it was a victory for the health conscious horseman, since it ensures continued availability of economical, pure MSM.

I used it, along with Glucosamine for our Arctic Ice heifer. If you search SP, you will find pictures of her.
Not only did it work, she is sound as a cat. She was born upside down, and backwards. She was just about as crippled as you can get. She didn't even try to stand for 4 days.
Our vet is totally amazed how good she is now. He said he would have never believed it if he hadn't seen it for himself.

Lowman, what about a market animal?  I looked at the container of MSM I use on my horses and it says "for use in horses only" and "do not use on animals intended for food".

I guess it depends on how soon you are sending him off.
You have to withdraw most everything at least two weeks before market.
I also use this for my Mastiff. She has a bad ACL in her left back leg. Keeps her moving like normal. I think labels like that are put on to keep any lawsuits off the company's back.  Talk to your vet if in doubt.
