You are correct... a steer show is being planned for the 2010 Agribition show. It will be a special event to be held in conjunction with the $0th anniversary of the show. This has been " in the works" for a couple of years now, and I think that there will be much more info. out shortly. It could be a great event!

JIT, I take it then it has passed through the board?  I've been tempted to phone the CWA office to check whats going on with it.  For one I'm really excited to see the fat steers return - even if it is only a one year deal.

After 10 years on the CWA board, I decided not to run again this year, so I am only going by what I have been told... and that is that the fat steer show has been approved and that they are going to try to do it up as a gala event. When we originally talked about doing this, there was some concern on showing steers this late in the year, as you have to know what you are doing to hold a steer that long especially if it has been shown at a early summer show. I don't think this is of any major concern now, with more and more producers moving their calving period a little later in the spring. I am more concerned with them getting the right sponsorship and prizes to draw the steers there. If done right, people will drag a steer a long ways to compete.

This is AWESOME news!

I see no problem having a fall steer show, in fact I would much preffer it. I think it's ideal.

The weather is much more condusive to get a steer ready for a November show than a summer show, the cattle look 100X better that time of year.

I wish this was an annual event, if so there would be a market for later bred club calves which I would guess breeders would be HAPPY to meet.

For purebred breeders as well, why not breed those later calving cows clubbie and see if you can get something marketable?

Try selling a June yearling bull.... But a June prospect calf for Agribition would be doable.

Well Grant I didn't realize you had not run again, while it was a short stint together on the  prospect committee I thought you did a good job.
Yes from what we've been told it is probably a one shot deal.  There may be a chance it could go for 2-3 years, last I heard.  They don't want it to get stale.
As a breeder I'd love the chance to open up another market.  It sure would give some of the later born and even the late bloomers a home.  With an extra years notice I'm sure there would have been some bred just for this purpose.  I'd bet that if the money is good enough a few people look to the US for summer borns.

The problem has always been in getting good sponsorship for the steer show, and to get buyers in this market, who will support the sale of Champions. We finally did away with the Sale of Champions, after many years of mixed results. I really don't know why this is such a hard sell, when other events have such good sales. Our local 4-H sale in Weyburn, is always a wild event. This year the local Ford dealer, dropped $38,000 in losses on the steers he purchased. He still maintains it is the best advertising he does all year.

If this show in 2010 is a success, it will be much easier to get it going again. If you have any ideas of someone who may be interested in becoming a sponsor or buyer, let someone on the CWA board know. I would love to see this thing go on into the future as well. I think it adds a little excitment and glamour to any great show.
