The truth lies in how many outstanding shares Larry Pope held prior to the takeover - I don't think a merger would have required a 31% premium.  There's no way they were undervalued that much.

The USDA should come up with solutions to diversify the inspection process to promote a less consolidated food industry.
Are you, in this instance, suggesting an appropriate involvement by our Federal Gov't?

GB ;) ;)

actually the opposite.  i want less involvement so that smaller slaughter plants can exist and compete on a more level playing field.  these plants tend to want to also be organic, halal, and kosher compliant.

it would allow producer to customer sales and expand the tax base. ;D

I do not eat any fish, poultry that are labeled "product of china/japan", I guess I will now add pork to that list.
Actually I spend a fair amount of time looking for USA on the label. Not "USDA inspected" but actual USA product.

I agree, however, that would require several Acts of Legislation. Which, would open another "Window of Opportunity" for all forms of Political Trickery and Voter Buffoonery. Plus, a lot of senseless arguments, even among proponents of said Hypothetical Legislation. Especially from Establishment Republicans who'd argue that it'd be a door to increases in the Islamic Population through existence of Hilal Butchers, as well as from Liberals who'd view it as a Zionist Conspiracy that'd favor Kosher Processors.

the government (taxpayers) for some reason hate opportunity and any unknown.

they are sadly misguided as this is the exact arena that best allocates resources.

for the taxpayers who are scared of dealing with individual producers, they can always rely on the facist solution (our existing marriage of big corporate and big government)

it's amazing how at least 99% of the population if not more hates change or diversity.
