I have heard that you can use CIDR's twice if you clean then and keep them dry after there first use. Are they as effective as the first time or less effective?

There is a link on here about this. I have done it for years & so have other people. So people don't do it, say if you are going to the trouble to AI or put eggs in , then why scrimp on the $10 .I can see it both ways.

I was told by someone in the know to use an autoclave to clean them. They get great results from the re-used CIDRs. I haven't tried it myself.

Have reused CIDR's since I started with them.  My best results have always been with the 2nd use of them.  Actually use them 3 times, but have been told that the Canadian ones are "stronger" and our price is closer to $20 each.

We have reused Cidrs as well, We do double rinse system. We have one bucket of clean water and a second bucket of water with Nolvasan Disinfectant Solution diluted with water. We pull them from the cow, dunk and swoosh in the first bucket and then dunk and swoosh in the second bucket. Then we lay them on clean paper towels until they dry.  Also we  put clean water in the first bucket about ever 15 cows.

In my opinion reusing cidrs only makes sense if you have a lot of cows, If you reuse 150 cidrs then the price goes form $10 to $5, and you save $750.

P.S. If we pull a cidr and it's covered in manure we just throw it out, but about 95% of the time they come out fairly clean.

LJ, I wouldn't be scared of using them a month or 2 past exp. date. After that I don't know. They are like any drug or even the milk in your refrigerator. It's not going to be good today & then tomorrow be clabbered.

I wouldnt be worried about the expiration date as far as causing infection or anything, the hormones may get weaker over time, but all that will do is maybe make them a little less effective.
I have always reused CIDR's, we use Nolvasan and Water to disinfect when we pull them, but we also disinfect when putting CIDRs in as well.  Most if not all CIDRs will say on the packaging how many days worth of treatment are in each CIDR depending on how long you leave your CIDR in depends on how many uses you get out of each, but as a general rule of thumb I dont use a CIDR more than twice.
