I am down in here in Texas which is all slick shearing shows except Ft. Worth. So I never really had to learn to clip haired cattle while I was in high school. Now we have started selling calves I am needing to learn how to fit the younger calves for pictures, etc. So my question is are the Kirk Steirwalt videos from Sullivans helpful? Or is there any other videos or learning methods. I clip on everything that is breathing in the barn so I get practice but I need some sort of guidance.

Thanks for any help

I learned to clip by taking a picture of a really well fit heifer to the barn and tried my best to imitate what the fitter did to that animal. It may sound naive, but it worked well for me. Having a reliable set of clippers is important, something that you know how to use well and know exactly how the hair will look if you do that specific something. I have grown up using Andis Sheep Shears with Texas Cattle Comb on the blade. They work WONDERFUL for me, I can do almost anything with them. Anyway, JMO.

I agree with the Dave Guyer DVD too.  I get it out and re-watch it every now and then.  Also like to watch the big boys at the show but the most important thing i have learned is "clip" and clip as much as you can.  Those guys didn't learn how by talking about it.  Good luck!!
