Since this is sorta the main board, I thought I'd throw this out there. Before I look at all the prices and gag, which college do you think would offer me the best start for my learning goal? I am most interested in Beef nutrition and genetics. I am also very interested in Beef reproduction. I have even considered becoming a specialized bovine vet.  Of course, I need a basic degree in general Ag first and foremost. I have considered a couple junior colleges because they offer a very good deal on the first two years of Ag ed. I have Laramie (Wyoming) and Northeastern Junior (Colorado) in mind. Does anyone prefer one over the other? Any other 2 years in mind? And for a "4 year" college, I have CSU, UNL, and KSU in mind. Which do all y'all like? I also heard about South Dakota state? Any input on that college? Ultimately, my parents and close mentors will help make the final decision, but I'd like some input from several different points of view.
Thanks.

I am about to graduate from Kansas State in Animal Science, and am applying to go to grad school in Bovine Nutrition.  I would re comend it to anyone.  The professes are great.  I can go into my genetics professors office at almost anytime and just sit down and ask him questions about anything.  Most of my professors know me by my first name.  To top that KSU has one of the best vet programs in the nation.  My opinion is that KSU is the best ASI school in the nation.

Bump. Any opinions and/or experience are appreciated.

Since you asked for an opinion here is mine.  Remember that is it my opinion and take it for what its worth as I am an ISU Animal Science graduate.  First, make sure which ever junior college you attend that the credits will transfer to a four year school.  Try to find out if the junior college classes transfer for credit to a specific major at the 4 year school and not just as an elective course.  I would recommend KSU among your 4 year schools.  They are leaders in many areas of beef production and will be the US center for bio-security in the very near future.  I would shy away from CSU and consider UNL, but would opt for KSU.  All-in-all each school is accredited and each has their own strengths.  Do your research now so you are prepared later.

KSU for the reasons listed by the previous posters.  I'd also like to point out that Manhattan is a nice town to live in .. big enough to meet your needs, yet still has that small town feel to it.  KState is the leader in a lot of ag related fields and has one of the top if not the best ASI program there is.  If you do choose to go to a 2 year, as stated before, make sure those credits transfer.    I might be biased as a KState Alumni but it was the best then and I believe it is even better now!

Thank you all so much! I may check out if NJC will transfer credits to KSU. Also, isn't there a JC in Colby?

If you were to rank colleges, in terms of animal science and related majors, how would you rank the following schools?
Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Iowa State, Ohio State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State Or any others you feel would be in the top 5 or so schools?
Just though it would be interesting to see how everyone saw these schools.

I think that The University of Illinois needs to be put in there, especially for the Vet School and also Genetics and Reproduction.  Heck, their beef department is pretty good too.  I might be a little biased, but I think U of I would be a great school for an Animal Science major to transfer to.

IMO..  I'd probably take Tech out of that top 5 lineup.  You could argue a couple other colleges  into that slot and then shuffle the order any which way you want.  Each of those schools has their strengths and a lot is going to depend on your focus.

I am looking into becoming a Large Animal Vet. From what I have researched, I am leaning towards going to the University of Nebraska Lincoln and the transfer program to Iowa State University for the Vet program.

KSU Vet Program is pretty tough to get in even with good grades, I think they almost expect you to get rejected once.  A good letter of recommendation will help.

My brother went to KSU and my sister is going to Mizzou right now.  She really likes Mizzou and with their vet program you get out of the classroom and into clinicals faster.

A friend of mine that works for Dr Mimms in TX , went to KSU for his graduate studies & really liked it. If you want to go somewhere a little warmer you might want to consider Auburn Univ., they have a well reknown vet program.

Has anyone gone to or know anything about the Curtis Ag College in Nebraska? I would wonder if their credit would transfer...

I am a KSU Grad and my husband has worked at the KSU Vet School. Tough to beat programs.

Another good program is Butler Community College in El Dorado, KS.  I think only one of my classes didn't transfer to KSU from there, and they have just expanded their ag campus.  El Dorado is about 30min from Wichita.

My little brother went there and so did aj's son. My brother didn't transfer so aj might know more about what transfers. My brother was there when Clyde Cranwell and all of the old Colby CC guys were there so I think they might have been alittle more persuasive on getting things to tansfer then they are now
