Cool Room

I am going considering building a cool room out of an existing stall in my barn. It will be 10x20 ft, I think I have it figured out how to build this pretty cheaply. The only thing I am not sure about is what I should use for a cooling unit. I am located in Kansas, hot hot days and it can be humid in the summer. Room will be for 2-4 fat steers and yearling age heifers. Would a large window ac unit be enough?! Anybody have experience with this?

your going to want more room Id say add about 15 ft to the length and 5 ft to the width

Window units are not adequate for 4 calves.  They will produce too much body heat and moisture.  They may cool a bit but will run constantly and inefficiently.

A truly efficient unit would require thick, moisture-resistant walls and maybe 12--16" in the ceiling to limit outside radiant heat and store some of the cooler air inside.

Don't forget a safety device that will open the doors if the power goes out.  The calves will die within an hour or two.

My best advice is to consult a trained refrigeration professional.

Look into Cool Calf, or at least talk to them.  We found out it was going to be cheaper for us to buy a brand new unit than to try and use one we had given to us, then have the refrigeration guy come out and hook it up.  Cool Calf also has all the safety features available too and they can help you get it set up.
