My Family and I are headed up to Oklahoma to purchase cattle out of the COC sale next week.  It will be our first time going to the sale and we are very excited about the trip.  Has anyone been to the sale before?  What can we expect and is there any advice you can give to some newbies.  With almost 500 lots I was feeling kinda of confused but since the videos have come out it looks like there will be plenty of good ones to choose from.

Any comments or advice is appreciated.

If at all possible try to get out there on Friday or at least very early Saturday.  That's alot of cattle to sort through, and they are spread out in big traps - it takes awhile to sort through them.  Sometime Saturday morning the "top end" of the bred heifers will be sorted up into smaller pens closer up, making it easier to look if these are what you're planning on buying, but you'll need deep pockets on those.  The other bred heifers will be kind of sorted by breed/color, making it a little easier if you're after something specific. 

Wear comfortable shoes/boots, and cool comfortable clothes - it's usually warm (sometimes hot) and windy.  Bringing your own chairs isn't a bad idea - the bleachers fill up fast, and outside of that, seating is pretty much on bales of hay.  There'll be plenty of good food and cold drinks, so no worries there.  Unless you're only intersted in the featured lots that sell early, be prepared to hang around awhile - there are always some good deals to be had, but patience is a must unless you have the money to buy what you want early.

Take a cart to look at cattle or get there early to use one they provide and take the key with you when you get out to look. Will be lots of good cattle. I grade them by catalog, video and in person. I have had great luck with the donors I purchased.

Try to narrow your choices down based on catalog and video as much as possible, thats a lot of cattle to work through if you wait to do it all on sale day.  If your buying in the top end, then yes you are going to need some pretty deep pockets, however if you wait past the top end there are some really good deals on really good cattle up there.  My advice, if you know you cant hang with the big boys in the top end, dont waste to much of your time looking over those cattle, I always like to see the good ones in the sale, so I am not saying dont go take a gander at them, just dont spend a bunch of time marveling at them.  If there is something you know you dont want, mark them off and dont waste your time with them.  Spend your time evaluating the ones your interested in and then break them down into groups based on how much you like them so you know what to bid on.  With a sale of this magnitude going into it with a game plan is key if you dont want to be overwhelmed when you get there.

Thanks for all the sound advice.  We are headed up in the morning so we can spend all day friday sorting thru the cattle.

Twisted, your advice follows almost to a tee the advice Chambero gave me and I think it will be are plan.  We are by no means going to be looking at the top end and have spent a lot of time going through the catalog and looking at videos.  We are gonna be patient and wait for the deals on our own top end picks.

Due to an illness in our family my wife has decided not to go. That will open things up a little bit for me.  ;D

just got back home from the sale.  Wow.  Unbelievable.  !/2 interest in Lot 260 brought 26,500.  Lot 219 brougt 34,000.  Bought lot 23 a Yellow Jacket heifer for $3,500 and thought I got a bargain.  Some really good cattle and great folks.  Even the food was good.
