I Have been thinking of crossing up some of my Angus purebreds to club calf bulls.

What are some you would recommend? I would like to keep some a replacement heifers.

Is Heat Wave or any of his sons a good choice for club mam ma cows? Or stick with the WMW lines?

Should I stay away from the PHA/ TH carriers?

Thanks in advance for your help.

well if you are trying to raise great mamas and breed to a carrier bull 1/2 will be bulls and 1/2 will be carriers so only 1/4 of your calves will have a chance to be the next great mama cow, so I would breed to a clean bull...... if your cows are really good a bull like dr who might yield a county fair type steer, but the heifers should give you a pretty good chance. Not much positive strokes on here regarding HW mama's, probably those will be market heifer deals, HW is TH + I think

I think you need to decide if you are breeding for club calves or for club calf mommas, breeding to clubby bulls doesn't give you a replacement heifer it gives you a heifer that should have been a steer.IMO  I think WMW comes as close to being able to do both as anyone, but you're giving up some on both sides trying to get middle of the road.

Breed your angus based cows to get those good club calf mamas. Breed them to bulls like climax, carney man, maximus, sos, rsvp,3D. Keep all the nice heifer calves and when they mature breed them to club calf bulls. and yes HW is a th carrier.

I take it Vet Tech is a sim. man lol  I really like Dr Who, Carney Man, Full Flush, Draft Pick and a few others and you can never go wrong with Meyer 734 for heifers either... just my thoughts

You don't really want to cross the breeds up a whole lot so you can maintain some kind of consistency. sim angus and maine angus crosses seem to work really well. you could breed to a maternal maine bull that is pha clean like free whiskey (he is new though so we don't know alot except that he is a full brother to irish whiskey). If you could have pha clean draftpick then that would be good.

if you want the sim angus, i would suggest 3c macho or maybe picasso or climax.

the thing i have noticed with clubby calves out of straight angus females we have raised never quite had the power that you really desire. the muscle expression and pattern is just different so if you can get a nice heifer out of an angus cow that may just have a little more muscle you should be set.

lol no we raise club calves. I just think that sim abgus cattle with Meyer influence are tough to beet when it comes to making club calves :)

Who Made Who would be my first choice, then hannibal or dr. who, then carneyman or meyer 734. Dont think you can really miss with any of those for making club calf mommas!!! :)

we're breeding a lot of angus to ree heights this year. we'll also be using heatwave and rain maker. We plan on keeping back some of the females if we can (I don't object to selling them though) I don't think clubby bulls on straight angus or straight anything for that matter will cross them up enough to be really concerned about losing consistency.

I've seen some awesome Nelson 26T2 calves out of angus cows.  I'd consider him if you want to make club calf mama's then go onto a cross bred.

How about using Chiangus bulls, bulls like Trackin Norman,Aces Image. While these matings may not give you the next great steer but the heifers will be very functional mommas and the bull calves should be very marketable as commercial herd sires.

What do you all thing of these bulls I have been thinking about:

Johnny Walker Red
Mercedes Benz
Hired Man

Have you ever heard of the Bull "Hairy" from Select Sires?

I like the jonney walker red and hired man ideas a lot. And we have used Hairy some....good bull. He can sometimes make them a little straight legged so breed him to a cow witha good hock set. But overall a pretty good bull. I think his heifers are more valuable then his steers. His dam is a cow called Hairietta, one of the best in the country. Hairy is a meternal sib to Mammas boy, king meyer, role model, pac man, show business, shockwave, frank the tank, discovery, ect...

mercedes sounds like a real good cross we are going to use some of him this summer. If you would want to go with sim influence The Foreman looks like a great bull for clubbys and his sire has had some great females. As far a club calve bulls I have seen some nice Money Shot calves but he is a TH carrier.
