One of the heifers which was purchased this spring came up pregnant during palpation.  A little known history on her is she is a commercial Simmental x Angus her calf was black and is likely sired by a black Angus bull.  The calf was born bright but it was quickly evident that things weren't quite right, he had a normal front end but his hind end was far from.  The first thing that was noticed is a "raw" patch over his hips where there was no hide.  His tail came out on the left side of this hole (so left side of the spine over the left hip).  There was no anus.  His hind legs were proportionate in length to his body but had no flexibility in the joints and were twisted.

This calf has been euthanized and has been handed over for research at the University of Calgary, and samples have been collected by the vet involved as well.  Has anyone seen anything like this before?

My neighbor had 3 calves born earlier this year that looked and acted normal but had no anal opening.  The first two he did not catch until they died after several days, and he inspected them and realized the abnormality.  The third he put down at birth.  I think it is strange that he had 3 born in one season.  Could something be causing this?
