Dehorning with a Callicrate bander

Anyone ever do it before, or have much luck with it?  I have only ever banded calves with ours, however father in law has one with horns that I would like to take off.

I have a friend who does it all the time and he says that it works well. I tried it on a couple of late calves last winter, and I could not get the band to stay on the horn base until I could duct tape it in place. I need to try it again. From what I have heard, the horn simply drops off in about 3 weeks with no blood and the horn cavity is completely closed in as well.
