With "Denver Season" here I thought this might be a good place to share some tips for the first time visitors to the famous Denver Stock Show.

My tip:  If you're in the yards, make sure to have chores done before it gets dark.  As soon as the sun goes over the horizon the temp drops what seems like 50 degrees in a matter of a couple minutes.

Another tip:  Take time to check everything out.  There are some pretty cool people down in the yards with cattle that will talk your ear off if you give them the chance, who knows you might end up making a new friend!

Don't forget to allocate plenty of time to visit all the vendors!  They're almost as good as all the shows!

if you are going to be eating there for 2 meals a day, skip one and just go to the buffet there for lunch.  It kept me full for most of the day until I left last year.

Everybody thinks they have to see "Casa Bonita".  Dont bother, it is a tourist trap and the food is revolting.  Go to La Loma instead, close to NWSS off of Spear Blvd.  www.lalomarestaurant.com

Do take the kids all the way upstairs to see the children's ranchland, even if you have farm kids, there is some really neat stuff up there....and the adults can duck into the Coors Western Art Gallery....always some fabulous art!

For the young partiers,  squeeze into the Stockyards Inn, upstairs have a beer and smothered burrito.  have fun!

If you're taking kids check out the NWSS website.  Look up educational and special events.  They have a petting zoo, behind the chutes with a clown sessions, a behind the scenes look at the Wild West Show, youth art gallery, stick horse rodeo, etc.

The behind the chutes with a clown thing kind of reminds me of my younger days--but then again that's not a kids topic!!  Oh well, I guess she wasn't a clown really---just way too much makeup!!

You never know what the weather is going to be like, especially if you're in the yard. Bring a ton of layers. Bring some hand and feet warmers. I'd plan ahead and bring a lot of drinks and snacks, it gets really expensive.
Oh, also come look at the cows stalled on the hill (inside the building) there are some really nice ones that sometimes get forgotten.

Be prepared for any kind of weather is the biggest thing.  And if at all possible avoid eating on the grounds, hit store night before if at all possible.  Grew up attending almost every year and now attend with my own kids and it does get easier the older they get.  If ya can pick when ya go definitely go during the week, weekends are a zoo.

Brisket sandwich platter inside is pretty tasty, not a bad deal.  Before the Angus Foundation sale, there's a free hamburger feed.  Lot of the semen vendors leave early.  About 20 minutes away, hotels are a LOT cheaper.  We live fairly close if you need a friendly ear.

We ran into almost every type of weather imaginable. When we got there last Wednesday, it was 40 with 50mph winds. The next day was 70 degrees. On Monday, our show was delayed for two hours because they got 6 inches of snow and shut I-70 down and the judge couldn't make it to the grounds for the show. Basically be ready for anything!!
