That always almost brought tears to my eyes seeing the grand and reserve mkt heifers at ISF and knowing they had to die. I know that they arent optimum maternal stock, but my heaven, they are majestic creatures.

I heard today that they preg check the new market heifer class at Denver and you have to be open or you go home.

Alot of the big feedlots will feed the heifers MGA which suppresses estrus to reduce stress and to cut down on the percentage of dark cutters which is attributed to stress. Other than that they aren't typically spayed, that would be a pretty heavy surgery I would imagine.

there are a few feedlots in nebraska that actually spay heifers, its not as invasive as you think. Dr. Rupp of the GPVEC in clay center nebraska developed a tool (kimberly-rupp) that is easily inserted vaginally and go through the wall of the fornix  and an arm in rectally, the tool is shaped like a canula but has an opening on the side where the ovary is put into, twist the tube and a razor blade cuts the ovary off, do both sides and send her out the chute.... not that bad, i think the reason why you don't see it often b/c the tool is kinda expensive and most vets can't afford it/ can't use it enough to get it paid off, or would have to charge lots to do it, so MGA is easier for producers then to pay a bill.

Are you sure about this?  I don't have the catalog with me and maybe I misread but I could've sworn that there is a cow in the Frye/Trienen sale the according to the footnote was grand market heifer at the ISF.

Lot 183 is the DAM of the '05 ISF champion market heifer.

They often do single egg embryo transfer in the months before ISF. At least Kolhaus does(according to him) since they know they might win it every year

The hfrs that have been spayed feed alot lot steers. I have fed a few groups of them.  When you implant them you use steer implants, not heifer implants.

A MARKET heifer show is for MARKET heifers, which by definition is a heifer that is fed for the meat market.
A BREEDING heifer who is for BREEDING HEIFERS, which by defination is a heifer that is used for breeding purposes

If someone thinks a heifer is good enough for breeding, then she should be shown as a BREEDING heifer. If a heifer is more designed to be a MARKET heifer, then she should be shown as MARKET heifer.
IMO, a market heifer is one that isn't "good enough" to pass on their genetics to the next generation - isn't that why most heifers are in the feedlot? They are not good enough to be used as replacements.

And yes, every champion animal at the Iowa State Fair is sold at the sale of champions, then is ESCORTED to the slaughter plant where they are ESCORTED through the process. This way, if any "funny business" comes up, the animals have always been under a watchful eye for verification purposes.  Many are flushed prior to the show, some are even cloned. Nothing in the rules against that.

Show heifer, you are an intelligent, learned agribusiness woman. That being said, every post you have ever typed is representative of a newly calved EXT daughter.

They recently added maket heifers to the show at the Kentucky State Fair and they preg check all of those heifers. I agree about having to slaughter heifers, but if I got that nice sale of champions check I'm pretty sure I could be ok with it.

Well said Show Heifer. If it was me and I liked the heifer that much to breed, show her as a breeding heifer, or if you're not sure I would DEFINITELY flush her before show. Heck if you can get two flushes in before show time, I'd imagine you're doing pretty good, but I think that'd be hard to do.

Has anyone surgically altered a steer to compete in a market heifer class. I assume it could be done. If the payout was big enough. A little plastic surgery? Always trying to help.

That sounds like it would be to much work.

But you never know with some of the people out there.

The Kolhaus heifer,( ISF. GC. ), was flushed 3 times off of her natural heats. It's the first time that I had heard of it being done, but brilliant IMO. Wonder when those embryos/pregnancies will show up on a sale.
About the big payout cks for winning the "big one", the payouts the last few years probably wouldn't cancel out the purchase price on many of the contenders.

kolhaus' reserve heifer this year was the result of an egg retrieved from a previous champion of theirs. It was an interesting story. Also if thye can get the ovaries at time of slaughter transova can retrieve viable eggs for IVF.
