Does anybody like the GF Kadabra Calves?

I recently got a GF Kadabra calf for my birthday and I was wondering how his calves turn out. I am new in the club calf stuff, but I have shown Limmi steers for two years.

If the steer has guts and a big butt, then you might have yourself a pretty darn good calf.  All the Kadabra steers that I've messed with (mostly just fit them a bunch of times) are really pretty fronted, had good gone, decent thickness down their tops, and they all had really good hair.  They lacked in the rear quarter and guts.  If you've seen a picture of Kadabra, you would know that they get it honest.  The heifers out of him seem to make dandy cows.  FWIW, a Kadabra steer that I worked on a couple years back won a few county fairs and ran with some pretty big time steers at State Fair.

i had the pleasure to be around 4 kadabra calves in 2 years when they were fats. thick thick. big boned, and hair out the a$$. hairiest calves I've ever seen truthfully. two of them were smaller framed. 2 of them were bigger. my buddy one reserve at our fair with one of them and then he won a class with the other one. the other 2 big ones got 2nd class. talk about style   he is one of my favorites. all of them were really sound 2, no problems at all

Ive attached a pic i scanned a few years ago of the champion calf. also if I'm not mistaken, he told me the pictured calf got 3rd overall at a smaller show in Kentucky

Ditto what Olson said.  My cousin had a Kadabra that was always the fanciest calf in it's class, but he was high flanked, shallow in the twist & he had virtually no lower rear quarter.  However was real clean fronted, wide topped & even somewhat thick in the upper quarter, walked like a cat & had hair like you wouldn't believe.

I used Kadabra for two years.  I had more structural problems out of him than any bull I've ever used.  They were pretty consistent calves, just had structural trouble on every single steer (4 or 5).  I did get good heifers, two of which have been kept in the herd.  Both had their first calves last fall and are doing fine.

Just keep an eye on your steer and make sure he gets plenty of exercise to minimize the chances of leg problems showing up as he gets heavy.

I really like these calves they have a ton of style, wonderful hair and great tops. They do lack a little muscle in their rear compared to say a Heat Wave calf but they more than make up for it with their extension. Here is a pic of one of ours this year.

There was a red kadabra at our county fair last year and it was the best fronted flashiest calf there. Kinda lacked rear quarter and wasnt super square hipped but from the side profile it was really cool looking. It went on to be Res. Maine steer. Pretty good at our fair.

Ive seen a lot of them and I like them when they are young usually. They usually have that kinky hair and are pretty to look but as they grow Ive seen some that turn out and get very straight up front and lack some dimension to the lower quarter.

I have probably had 25-30 Kadabra's over the last few years, and they were all consistant, saleable calves, not a throw away in the bunch.  Probably have my best one this year out of a Heat Seeker cow.  He works on a wide variety of cows, sort of like his brother Lifeline.  I don't use him as much anymore, but I keep a few straws around just for those cows I'm not sure what to breed them to, and he has always worked good on heifers.

Ditto toeverthing said here. Chambero and I have had the same problems,with structure. If you get a sound one,some of them are really good. He has always thrown better heifers than steers. I have seen some of his heifers that were damn sharp until you seen them walk. Leroy O'dell of Asher,OKla. has had as much luck as anyone,when bred to good Angus cows.

a Simmy cow.  Dont really know a whole lot about the cow she is out of.

we have had a few of them over the years i would say probably 10-15. my experience has been about 3/4 of them end up having structural problems but the ones that dont are pretty good. in our herd he has worked best on shorthorn plus females but that is just our experience. here is a heifer we had this year that i think is pretty good.

we have a nice kadabra heifer. i dont have a pic of her thats recent but shes about 2 and is still very hair and muscular. her dams a purebred hereford
