With all the discussion on other boards about cattle with certain color ear tags winning under certain judges I was curious who used what color tags?
I know these:

bonham - blue
guyer- green
Stenberg-black
Caldwell - red (I think)
Any others?

the farm tags are orange & am sure that doesn't matter squat! We don't tag our own cattle. Too few to mix up.
We did sell to a family a calf that was tagged Jake (herd bull). The boy's name was also Jake & I think he really thought that was neat.

You'll see some heifers getting showed with "Exposure" in their ears for 2-3 months after that sale.  I don't see that many tagged steers getting showed down here once you get into May or so.

I always thought that it was kind of "tacky" to show a calf that still had the tag of sale or the breeder or whatever in his ear.  If the calf is good enough people are going to know where it came from.  You don't need to have it hanging from his ear.

I totally agree.  We don't tag the calves that we KNOW are gonna be show calves.

Blackford- black/red

Gray/Keller- I've seen red ones, and I think a few other colors.

Olson Family Shorthorns- Dark Red if we ever start using them again.

We use a different color for every year.    I cut the tag out of the heifer we bought at a certain sale last year because like a pp said.. it is kind of tacky.

I use purple for AI calves and green for cleanup calves. I leave my ear tags in my heifers so when she's bred I don't have to tag them again. My steers are taged so when people come to look at them they can remember their numbers.

we tag all the fullblood heifers with purple tags, fullblood bulls are yellow...percentages are blue.  we also put the sire/dam on the tag so we know who's by or out of who.  makes it easier when someone comes out to look at calves....

At our place all of my cattle have red tags with white writing. My dad's cattle have orange tags with black. We actually have to be very careful on the color tags we use because of all the black cattle in the country. Each of the neighbors has a designated color that they've used for years, so if you see a strange tag show up in your herd you can figure out who the owner is easily.

We buy pre numbered tags, could care less about color. None of our neighbors tag, so no problems with that.

We freeze brand as a permanent ID.

Do you ever have trouble with the white fading off after a few years?   We had some white on black tags that did that.

That's exactly the problem we've been having. I had been using purple tags with white marker, but the white keeps flaking or fading. I moved to teh Richey tags that are engravable with a dremel tool. Now we're red and white and the color shouldn't flake off anymoe.

I hand write a tag for each calf with the dam's # and the sire ... I use blue in bulls and pink in heifers... just by seeing their faces know sex and parents... I think it makes it easy when someone else is looking at your calves

I have a friend who I swear, 90% of his record keeping is done on the the ear-tag of the calf.  Birthdate, BW, Parents, you name it...

All calves we sell off the farm have a tag with our logo engraved on them as well as their # from our sale. It is just a cheap and great form of advertising if you ask me as long as the buyers leave them in.

I never gave it any thought about the ear tags making any difference. When we buy a calf I don't change that tag did not really care what tag was in their ear. All the steers we buy have to have the tags changes when they go to the first weigh-in. Our ear tags have our farm name on them and we tag bulls/steers blue and the heifers pink. I just did that because I thought it was cute plus it made it easy when people come to look at the calves.

I always remove our eartags.  I think it gives the calves a much cleaner appearance!

Not to switch gears but has anyone other than me had calves ears split from the hole left by the tag?
