Recall that capital requirements have been as low as 1%, meaning a bank need only retain $1 million in actual cash to write $100 million in loans. If those loans drop in value by 2%, the bank must raise cash or it is essentially insolvent.

In these economic times, I'm proud to be a Okie.  When the rest of the country suffers, Oklahoma & Texas seem to boom.  One of the best things is the abundance of locally owned banks which have been extremely frugal since the Penn Square Bank fiasco of 1982.  http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=940DE4DE1030F937A35756C0A96E948260
With the Oil Patch in high gear, unemployment is in the 3.5% range state wide and 2% in much of rural OK.  Housing and Business expansion are both in an upward swing, as is retail and most of the service sectors.  What comes as a surprise to many is that Aviation/Aeronautics is our largest, and fastest expanding indusrty, fueled greatly by Tinker Air Force Base (the states 3rd largest employer).  Oklahoma has diversified so greatly since the "bust" of the middle '80s we may be recession proof (and maybe not).

If is weren't for the Indian Casinos, these would be the "Best of Times".

the airport in Alva OK has done pretty well over the years as well.  the bank in hopeton has a depsitor list that would make most banks jealous.

in alva, you can still see the guard towers used in WWII for an officer POW for germans.  i believe there is still a reuninion of sorts due to the good treatment of the POW's and large german population in the area.

Alva is an interesting place. I did Sports "Color & Stats" for a local radio station back in the 80s.  The old OIC conference was once quite a powerhouse in both Football and Basketball.  All my trips to Nortwestern and Panhandle were exciting and L O N G.  Here's some neat Alva area entertainment. http://www.alvaok.net/AlvaChamber/attractions.asp

I had an old rancher once tell me the secret to making lots of money in the cattle business.  He had a 4000 acre Angus operation in Connerville, OK.  He said, "the way to make money with cows, is to have an oil well for every calf to suck".  He also owned a whole lot of oil production in the Velma - Alma area.
