What is your favorite maternal maine bull. Preferrablely purebred or high percentage maine. Also available as an AI sire.

Im no into maines, so i would have to say Pistol Pete, or do like the old days and but a dash of shorty in the mix.

I like Habanero. Iceman has also done well for me. Low % would be Foreplay. Money Man is working for many. He just didn't click w/ my cows though.
Gold Club would have been a top choice if PHAF

Magic and Midas are pricey (relatively) - I believe SEK has both. Topper and Pistol Pete are still available at reasonalbe prices from SEK

Yeah REM - Chill Factor - esp on Angus cows - and how about The Witch Doctor? One of the only tri-athletes in the breed.

I really like many of the older Maine bulls - I haven't been impressed enough with any of the newer bulls to think about buying semen - finding that I am looking at other breeds to find what I want - calving ease, maternal ability, soundness, beautiful udders, growth and temperament - all with less hype and spin  : : :

I just can't or won't go outside the Maine breed personally. Too me they've given me the best package. Now I did use Gizmo on one cow this year. First time I've used a none Maine bull.

Black Dice is a good bull although some of his BW's can be high. I've liked some Fear This too. The Man also has done good & can't forget Hard Core.

oh red now that is spin a politician would eat up  ;D I can't go outside the Maine breed but I did use Gizmo - heck he is almost red and so from my porch he could look like a Maine - maybe, if it was snowing and I wasn't wearing my glasses and it was almost dark : :

Black Dice - I forgot about him - I have seen show heifers sired by him that I liked - the certificate fee always kept me from doing anything with him - not sure the heifers made great cows

The female I want to use the semen on has Pistol Pete on both sides two or three times already. I would prefer to stay away from that. Dr. Who was a thought, but I hadn't had any experience with his females. From what I hear they do okay. I have a WMW female that is fantastic.

Well, I'm am willing to try anything at times! The cow is also red/white so I thought it would be a good match!

At the top of DL's list was FR Magic 179X.  What more can be added?

I've stated many times on this board that I believe the cow to be far more important in a mating than the bull (as far a heiritable traits are concerned).  With that said, I noninate a bull to the list that I suppose will draw some objections:

I know, Red Alert = no milk, but Polleroid had a mighty nice AA Black Gold daughter as his Dam.  And,Polleroid, when bred to those Midas and Magic daughters, produce some really incredible cows.

This is my take on the "maternal sires" but I'm no expert and have relied much on word of mouth. Calvin Fryer one of the most experienced Maine breeders who makes a living selling replacement females says Witch Doctor or his offspring is still a good one for making great cows. The Cunia genetics are always pretty darn hard to beat too. Those Chill Factors are just plan good from the little I've seen and have also heard only great reports. Dr. Who is perhaps good, but have seen train wreaks from stacking too much Power Plant and can become pathetically crippled in their structure. This could be from too much of the wrong Cunia genetics which Power Plant has, and is only an uneducated guess. The Midas and Smithbuilts are awfully good too and have a proven track record and probably did not get sampled enough with Angus cows for making half bloods, as Cunia. Pistol Pete females are good but can develop some udder problems after having a few calves from my limited experience.

Topper was a interesting bull and DL seemed to have sampled him more then anyone I know so I would respect her opinion. Maybe she could elaborate a bit more and give us the good, bad and the ugly on him.

Bookem Dano was also popular and DLD used him a little. I would like to know more about him. How about all the dirt, DLD?

Best heifers we have seen this year are out of Paddy OMally. Also seen some really nice Paddy cows. Money Shot seems to be one of the hot new ones that is throwin good stuff.

I thought about Paddy but want to stay away from PHC. I want a female out of my mating. Dr. Who seems to be in the running. Thought Chill Factor but worried if it was a steer would it be stout enough.

forgot Strictly Business

I think some problems w/ the newer bulls is that we've gotten away from maternal traits. we don't look at udder confirmation as a trait, weaning weights & calving issues. I'm not talking about just BW's weights but if one cow can't handle an 80# calf & another has no difficulty having a 100# plus calf. Also live births & vigor of the calf at birth. Too me these are just as important maybe even more so than does the bull produce show winners, big butts or hair.
