We have several bags of quality textured show lamb feed that we have left over after getting rid of our herd this past month to focus solely on show cattle. I was wondering if it was safe to feed the remaining sheep feed to a pen of replacement heifers that will not be shown?

Without knowing exactly what is in your feed mixture, no one on the board could give you a safe answer. Are their any additives @ all in your lamb mix? If it is just grain & protein with no drugs or additives chances are it would be fine, but you need to ask your feedman or a knowledgeable nutritionist to be certain.

If it is lamb feed, it's more than likely 18% protien.  There is probably a coccistat (sp?) like bovatec in it.

I agree with CAB but generally speaking, if it is not medicated, it is probably safe.

Having said all that..  I have fed sheep feed to bucket calves after they are weaned and on grain good.

any medication that is approved for sheep more than likely has been approved for cattle prior

however, you can kill sheep if you feed them complete feeds designed for cattle--high copper

you should be ok if you feed small amounts per day.  dont go the other way, as teh sheeo cant handle the copper in cattle feed.

Thanks for the responses! Sorry I should have provided a little more info. It is medicated with Lasalocid and is an 18% ration. I was aware of the copper toxicity in sheep, just wanted to make sure it was safe to feed to my heifers. No other ingredients seem to be anything different than a basic cattle ration.
