What advice can you give to someone buying a heifer for the first time. Clearly breeding stock are going to have different desirable qualities than livestock for market and I need some help.
I have found a heifer that I like from a breeder that I have purchased market steers from before and want your opinion of her

Nice looking heifer. Very feminine yet has some thickness.
If you trust the breeder you have been purchasing your steers from, then ask him to look at his cows and replacement heifers. Ask him why he chose to keep the replacements he did and not another heifer.
The other thing I would be very aware of is defect carrier status. Personally, I would not purchase a carrier, but that is something for you to decide and deal with. But, I would NEVER purchase a heifer without KNOWING her status via a dna test (sorry, I don't trust "clean pedigree").

The other thing you have to consider is why do you want to purchase a heifer. Show only? Building a herd to produce  (what are your plans?)  After you answer those questions, proceed to look around and get different opinions then make your decision!

Good luck and welcome to the herd!
