AMERICAN SHORTHORN ASSOCIATION ELECTS NEW BOARD
The 2007 ASA Annual Meeting
OMAHA, Neb., (January 29, 2008) – The American Shorthorn Association (ASA) 2007 annual meeting was held during the 2008 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) over the January 18 – 21 weekend. During the meeting delegates elected new ASA board members to replace three retiring board directors.
Retiring from the ASA board of directors was George Ashlschwede, Ahlschwede Shorthorns, San Angelo, Texas; Frank Bigelow, Bigelow Farms, O’Neals, Calif.; and David McElhaney, McElhaney Stock Farm, Hookstown, Pa. All three of these dedicated board members have served since 2002.
Newly elected to the board are Les Mathers, Ricky Guidry, and Billy Zach Taylor.
Les Mathers from Morton, Ill., operates Leveldale Farms which was established in 1852 and is dedicated to breeding highly fertile, easy calving, and rapid-growing cattle. Mathers graduated from the University of Illinois, has a medical degree, and currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Carle Clinic. His philosophy is to work with the other board members to expand and improve service to all breeders and exhibitors, and to support the identified strategic initiatives already in place.
Ricky Guidry from Bell City, La., owns RL Cattle Co, which is a family herd of about 150 commercial cows and 30 Shorthorn cows. Guidry served as a Research Associate with the Department of Agricultural Economics at LSU conducting research and teaching freshman-level courses, worked with the Federal Land Bank of Baton Rouge doing commercial and ag lending, and developed Dupont Building, Inc. He is dedicated to supporting agriculture nationwide and has the desire is to use his business background to help promote Shorthorn cattle.
Billy Zach Taylor from Salem, KY, began integrating Shorthorn cattle into the Taylor Stock Farm in 1960, and has shown, purchased, and sold cattle since then in over 25 states and Canada. Taylor brings first hand knowledge of several different aspects of the cattle industry, including commercial cattle production, producing registered cattle, and managing a backgrounding operation. The Taylor Family has been actively involved in the Shorthorn breed and strives to produce good, sound, functionally correct cattle.
Returning to the Board of Directors as the re-elected president is Richard Hahn, Hahn Family Shorthorns, from Minonk, Ill. Derek Jungels, Jungels Shorthorn Farm, from Kathryn, North Dakota., was also re-elected to vice-president of the board. Virginia Davis, KV Cattle, Frankin, Ind., was selected by the Board to join Hahn and Jungels on the ASA Executive Committee.

Other directors returning to the ASA Board include: Boyd Strope, Abertees Clan, O’Neill, Neb.; John Hagie, Cyclone Trace Cattle Co., Clarion, Iowa; and Nancy Ferguson, Hillside Farm, Corvalis, Ore.
The mission of the ASA is to contribute to the profitability and quality of life of its members and their customers by maintaining, protecting the vulnerability and enhancing the value of the herd book and performance database for Shorthorn cattle. The ASA is headquartered in Omaha, Neb., and was founded in 1872 with herd book records going back to 1822. Did they ever find out who was responsible for the calves that were stolen from cyclone trace in louisville?

The two heifer calves which were bought through the sale barn by a woman who kept them a couple of weeks, and then found out they matched the released description of the cattle. They were turned in and returned to their proper owners. The two bred heifers, however, were not so lucky and ended up in the slaughter house. I talked to the part-owner of one of the heifer calves and he said they were pretty lucky to get her back. (I'll say!!)

They had hired a private investigator, as the police didn't seem to worried about catching someone who had stolen a few cattle. Apparently, a young man who was there with South Devons did the deed. They weren't sure about the motive yet, because he obviously didn't get much money for him, but they had caught him, so hopefully they can find out!
