I sent some samples to genestar for the works on test's on some bulls.Does anyone have any ideas on the the efficiency part of the test. I have heard disscussions on the marbling and tenderness tests. It looked like the efficiency part of it would be of economic importance and worth while. Or is it a valid test? Feed efficiency would be benefical for cows and feedlot cattle. What happens if the efficient cattle just won't gain well in feedlots or are antagonistic to each other? :)

Give Philip Bentz DVM a call at 785-541-0261 cell 785-325-2838 office, he does CPEC Carcass Ultrasound, did a demonstration for our local livestock association, VERY interesting anyway he has a lot of information on that type of stuff and should be able to help you with understanding how the data you get back will translate into usable improvements.  He is very knowledgeable and has done a lot of testing and improvements in his herd and his studies may be of interest to you.

I tend to think that, if a cow is easy fleshing on grass, Her steer calf will be efficient in the feedlot. Where the "antagonism" comes into play, is if He gets "done" at too light a Carcass Weight.

There are so many traits to select for especially in the breeds with all the epd info.  Is external fat tied to marbling though? Everthing is tied to days on feed. The early maturing cattle will peak out early and then their effiency would go to heck if kept on feed. Really everything is relative. What to do?

bovigen says that the genes they market have NO antagonistic effect on the other genes of interest.  this of course does not mean there isn't, but hey.

I do find it interesting that as a breed, the zebu's excel in the feed efficiency department.  that said, one can select for or against anything, including tax write off's.

The grand slam bull is one of the better public released bulls(shorthorn) and he goes to dividend twice ...cool.
