So, I went to the open house in Strafford, MO today at Genex, and had a good time. I got to see many bulls, but the one's that stuck in my mind were Q Dog, Grizzly and Trendsetter.
Q Dog - OK, I'll admit I am NOT a club calf breeder, but what do people see in him? He was SMALL! About the size of my yearling simmental heifers, and was not that thick. He was dead lame on the back left, but the rep told me he thought he was injured at some point of time. Is there a Q Dog clone? The rep said they have collected a Q2, which he thought might be a clone but was not sure. Anyway, I was not impressed and will not use him (though I probably would never had anyway).
Another bull I saw mentioned on here that I was not impressed with was Mercedes. Looked like a horse with no muscle! HUGE!
Grizzly - not a bad looking bull, but was also lame. Rep told me they had recently had his hoofs trimmed, so that may have been why he was sore. He has a real pretty head, not sure if he throws it on his babies. he stood really thick on the front end, very wide!
Trendsetter - NICE BULL! I will try to use him next year. Now, I am a simmental breeder, so I am not sure if he would work in other settings, but he was LONG and HEAVY muscled! The only thing I did not like about him was his curly hair - that might be hard to work with on a calf!
Anyway, since we won the free sexed semen, I had to buy a new AI gun (cost almost $40!) so I can use the smaller straws, and they covered the new protocol used for heifers and fixed time AI (they call it the Show Me method since it was used to AI several hundred heifers sold in the Missouri Show Me Select sale). Some good information was passed on! Glad we went!!!
