Well, its that time of year again. We just bought two more steers, and one of them is a Maine. My ag teacher said we "need to feed him corn to slow him down" How is that a problem, and what does that mean?

they have a reputation of getting big.  i fed two out out of total package and they both tipped at 1750 at 18 months.  here's a pic of some NY's i'm having tonight.  they had about .5 fat on them.  i have to remember to tell them to not trim the fat.  they are about 30% bigger if not more than what you buy at the store.  they were aged about 3 weeks.

NY's are my least favorite cut.

i fed them a finisher ration from about 6 months old.

wow, those steaks were really good.  they were almost as tender as a store bought filet.  unbelievable.

You are probably feeding a Grower ration, and your Ag teacher recommends a Finish ration.  I personally believe it best to feed a Steer a Finish ration from about 2 months right up to slaughter.  Here is a good, economical ration:  Feed about 3% - 4% of body weight daily, and don't forget to add 1 - 2 oz. of good Mineral at each feeding.

1200 lbs. cracked corn
400 lbs. cotton seed hulls
200 lbs. Whole oats
100 lbs. soy bean meal
100 lbs. molasses

Feed twice a day, 12 hours apart - the same time every day.
