OSF: Are you saying that just because it is out of a pedigreed cow, and is sired by an AI bull, then it ISN'T  and shouldn't be a salebarn calf? Your right, a lot of calves are not "bred" to be salebarn calves, but that is exactly where they should go, and if you do not beleive me, I have a calf that is totally defect free (angusXClubbie sired) that had all the potential in the world, and right now, the coyotes wouldn't even eat it if it was ditch fill.   And I have a calf from a "grade cow" bred to my "herd bull" that would put the slap down on most "pedigreed" calves. You are making pretty broad and big implications in your statement which just are not true.

I wish you luck at the Expo Spencer, but it will be one tough ride and a lot tougher sale.

Believe me, we've sent some purebred calves to the salebarn that were bred to be pretty nice. What I'm saying is, why waste that pedigree and a calf that good on the sale barn?

Did I ever say anything about a "herd" bull?  No.  I would put my herd bull up against anyones. And a crossed up cow out of good stock is different than a grade cow, to me at least.  I mean that you could be lax about your management and breeding techniques and send the calves to the sale barn and make the same money as if you were to synch your cows and AI them  and then still send the calves to the sale barn.

I'd like to see your calf that would put the slap down on the pedigreed calves.  I'm always looking for unheard of stuff to polish up and bring out and surprise a lot of people.

In my opinion I think this calf could excel at expo if fed right(push hard), I wouldnt take this steer to the sale barn, but what I would do is get him worked good, get the hair goin', get some feed in him and belly him down a bit, and take him to a guest consignment clubcalf sale. That way you get your name out there as a breeder and probaly wont have the competition on the sale like you would at beef expo. There are lots of these sales out there that would probaly be overjoyed to have a calf that good on their sale. I think he would also make a good bull especially with habanero on the top side and a good lookin' cow on the bottom, but personally I would make him a steer and guest consign to a sale this fall. Again Just My Opinion and I'm not a big breeder or anything so this might not be the best advice, it's just what I'd do.

Picture and pedigree make your calf a very good high % MA prospect herd bull.  I would get him on feed immediately, and start fitting him.  At 7 - 8 months, get some great pictures and advertise him on every free site available, but start right here.  A high % bull like him should bring an easy $2000 sold private treaty, and you won't have a lot of feed cost in him.  Smart breeders know they can save a bundle buying a young bull from the breeder verses buying a "ready to go bull" at a sale.

I would like to see pictures, or even a video of the three of em. Have you ever thought about collecting your "herd bull" I mean there could be AI Sire potentail in your "herd Bull" if hes making that nice of a calf out of "grade cows". He seems to be to be a cow changer and he could be the next great thing that every one wants to use!

Spencer F. has a cow that goes back to Cunia, Novino, and Epinal multiple times and theres some Power Plant in there also. I mean I don't know about you folks but I on a regular basis bred cows like that to a bull like Habanero in hopes that I raise a calf that will sell for a $10 premium at the local sale barn. To find out later that he graded choice. I mean that truly would just mean the world to me.

The calf isn't sale barn material (hes to nice with good breeding to boot). So I personally would take him to a bull sell maybe not expo per say but at something of decent size, and exposure. OR try to sell him by private treaty, which would yield more profit, but wouldn't get your name out there near as well. Good Luck, looks like you raised a good'en

Where did I say I had "three" calves?
And because you are being an donkeys behind, you will never see them. But a few others that inquired will.

No, I won't collect my bull. He is mine. I am going to keep all of him. No thanks. But if I do you will be the first to know as he might help a few of your cows.

I don't know where you live aaok, but around here, corn in over $4, soybeans are over $11. So I don't know what you consider "not much feed cost" but feeding an bull for 7-8 months is going to cost a few bucks.

Spencer, I wish you luck on whatever your decision. Just let us know when and how much you sell him for.
