I'm so sorry.  Just about a year ago today I had to make the awful decision to put down my most beloved little dog, my Westie.  A friend sent me this and in case you haven't already seen it, it helped a little.  You'll never forget your dear Reba, but the pain will lessen over time.

"Just this side of heaven lies the Rainbow Bridge.

When a beloved pet dies, it goes to the Rainbow Bridge.  It makes friends with the other animals and frolics over the rolling hills and peaceful, lush meadows of green.  Our pets do not thirst or have hunger.  The old and sick are made young once more; the maimed and the ill become healed and strong.  They are as healthy and playful as we remember them in days gone by.

Though happy and content, they still miss someone very special, someone they had to leave behind.

Together, the animals chase and play, but the day comes when a pet will suddenly stop and look into the distance....bright eyes intent, eager body quivering.  Suddenly, recognizing you, your pet bounds quickly across the green fields and into your embrace.  You celebrate in joyous reunion,  You will never again separate.  Happy tears and kisses are warm and plenty; your hands caress the face you missed,.  You look once more into the loving eyes of your pet and know you never really parted.  You realize that though out of sight, your love had been remembered.

And now you cross the Rainbow Bridge together....."

I figure I'm going to have a heck of a stampede when my time comes!  Here's "Cody" celebrating his 15th Christmas and, yes, he's sitting on the couch!  I'll never have another one like him!

It's always an emotional time when a pet dies, especially one that has been with you for several years.  I've lost several pets that I was pretty attached to.  After some greiving, it should get better, but it will take a some time.  My thoughts are with you & I'm sorry about your loss.

Losing a pet is often a sad time. I have had a bit of a heavy heart for the past couple days as well, however, mine is cattle related. I did what I thought I would never do, and that is  I hauled one of my beloved herd bulls to the auction mart. He was a Rodeo Drive son that I raised and he had been a great herd bull. He was my bud.... he was one of the most gentle giants I have ever had around. He was quiet from the day he was born and he remained that way throughout his 6 years here.

He was probably too big for todays cattle trends.... well, no  probably about it... he definitely was! He weighed 3180 lb at the auction after the trailer ride and an overnight stand so if he even had 5 % shrink he would have weighed 3340 lb. He was in nice shape but he was not fat.I am 6'1" tall and when I stood behind him, the peak of my cap rested on his tail head. He had so much " right" about him. He moved like a cat, he had absolutely perfect feet and he was tremendously thick. His sons were always popular with our commercial buyers. His daughters had perfect udders and they are becoming excellent  brood cows.

Two years ago, he went through testicle degeneration, that is his testicles shrink 6 cm over 2 months. Then it stopped and we thought he probably would never breed again. Despite this, he settled 20 females each of the last two years in a short breeding season. This spring I added another herd sire and implanted 50 embryos, so it looked like Merger may not need to see service. I was not going to sell him, but then it was not real fair to him to have to stand in a pen and let the flies eat him either. I finally decided I would send him to market. On the way to town I almost turned around a few times. Now that he is gone, I feel like I have lost a best friend. In some ways he was a friend. When I did my pasture checks he always came to get his scratch when he saw the truck come into the pasture. When  breeding season was over, I would drive into the pasture and open the endgate of the trailer and he would just walk in. He seemed to know that it was time to go home. I never sae him try to fight with other bulls. Some tried to fight with him, but he would just stand there and let the other pick on him.

If I have stolen this thread, I apologize.... again. But Merger was my almost a pet in some ways and more than just a pet in other ways. Like a pet he was a faithful friend... and I will miss him. The $1939 he brought, as a meat bull, doesn`t mean much right now. I have attached a picture of HC Merger 93M ET.....

Sorry for your loss. I think pets are some of the best friends we can ever have. Their loyalty is never a question. :'(

So sorry about your loss, but strangely enough, my girlfriend's family's yellow lab just passed away on monday, and she too was 13 years old. She was very arthritic, and in the vet being checked for cancer and passed away at the vets. Very sad!!! We lost our male Corgi due to being hit by a car just befor Christmas and I know how devestating that was....they really become members of the family. You will overcome, and in your circumstance, just like my girlfriends, at least by experiencing a little pain, you now know the pooch is in a place of serenity without pain.
All the best

So so sorry for your lose. I am afraid that in a few years(I hope) I will have to go through that. I just hope the old boy just goes to sleep so I dont have to make that last decision.
JIT I too made that drive. I am not a very emotional person but I had the girl at the sale barn in tears too.

I know how hard it can be.  In the last few years we had to put down the only 2 dogs that I really remember from my childhood.  One was a cocker spaniel that we got when I was 7.  We finally had to put him down after he had a stroke and it was just to hard for him to do much of anything.  It was one of the hardest things that I have ever had to do in my life.

These are some of the reasons we "country kids" look at life differently than our urban brothers, and why our society is steadily declining in moral fiber. Our value for life (all of God's creatures) is instilled in our culture, that is something p.e.t.a.,  gangsters, and other non-rural socialists just don't get. Praise the Lord daylie that you have the opportunity to watch over the "cattle on a thousand hills" Psalms 50:10-11. Oh, what a responsibility!

:'( Oh, I feel so bad for you!  My dogs have always been a part of me and my very best friends. They are like children.  I thought I was going to have to put my dog down last fall.  He is 13 and has a bad heart and fluid around his lungs.  I bought a puppy to help with the transition.  Now I have two dogs! My old dog takes more pills than my 80-year-old father but he's doing great and I am enjoying the time we have left.  I will be crushed when he dies.  I hope that you get through this o.k.  We are all thinking of you.

I'm so sorry.  I feel for you too.    Our dogs are members of the family so it hurts to loose one.

I went into depression when had to put our first dog down. He was going through liver failure

I am totally dreading when sometime happens to your blue heeler Poolie. And don't even mention Woody passing away. I'll be a total basket case & you might as well haul me off to the hospital.

Beautiful poem dori. I'm sad for everyone's loss. Also your bull was a great one I'm sure JIT!

Sorry for your losses Just A Mom and JIT.  My old boxer Cedric passed away a couple of years ago.  He and I were buddies for 13 years as well and he was the "General" of our farm.  Nothing happened here that he didn't oversee and approve.  I asked the vet to put him down sometime I wasn't around and when the vet came to do it, Cedric, had already passed on.  Seemed like he knew it was his time.  I haven't been able to bond with another dog since.

My Calberta Paydirt cow, Hannah, probably should have been sold 3-4 years ago.  She has pretty bad arthritis and her feet need trimming two or three times per year but she keeps having a calf each year and I just don't have the heart to ship her.  Her arthritis has gotten much worse lately though, so this may have to be the year.  It'll be a damn long trip to the sale barn when that happens, though!!

I am so sorry to hear about your loss, at least she is not in pain any more.  My theory is that all of our animals do go to heaven and are all playing together and having a great time, and the best thing is that you will see her again one day up there!  (angel)

Oh my gosh everyone all I can say is THANK YOU- Im crying like a baby typing this but my heart is heavy but full too, the outpouring of all your concern is so touching,
To everyone this is EXACTLY WHY we all love steer planet we all truely care for each other like human beings, very little judging, just sharing.  I know this has been harder on me
due to the fact my Dad passed away a couple of years ago and my nephew got cancer this year and now our Reba, sometimes it just seems to be too much.  I also feel for everyone
and their cattle love, I have said many times on here how I greive even when we have to sell our cattle or heaven forbid one dies.  It is true us country folk really do enjoy
life in all aspects probably because we are so close to all forms of life from being born to death on a daily basis, almost like a hospital worker.  Reba was suffering but that was still the
hardest thing we have ever done.  Again Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
