We have two heifer, a steer, and a market heifer that we are trying to get adjusted to feeding in a tub so they will be ready for county and state fair as well as jackpot shows.  The steer particularily does not like to eat from the tub.  We are giving the steer approx 12 lbs of grain at feeding along with beet pulp, cotton seed hulls, depth charge, mineral, and melatonin.  The steer is eating at best 7-8 lb a feeding, sometimes not even that.  He is roughly 1260 and want him about 1330-1350 for state fair the third week in August.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If u go from feeding as a group in a bunk or trough straight to tying & feeding individually in pans, that's a big change. Cattle are creatures of habit, and some take longer to adjust to change than others. Maybe try feeding them together in the pans inside the trough for a few days. Then tie the cattle close enough together that they can share the feed pans with neighbors. They like to compete for food & will sometimes eat heartier if they have to in order to get the feed. Once they get used to the pans, hopefully you can get each eating out of his or her own pans and cleaning it up!

I always tell people to feed and water at home exactly the same as at the Shows.
