Herd bull question

We have two outstanding spring calves that are ready to go to work this season. Although we have a lot of inquiries, they have not been moved yet.

Therefore, my question is when you are purchasing a bull to use for an upcoming season, is it a slippery slope between getting a calf too soon and having to feed them until you are ready to use him vs. if you don't get him now you could lose out on him.

I know for us, when we are looking for a herd bull, we buy him right away to make sure we don't miss out. We have recently done that with a 5-month-old calf.

Last year, we had three solid bull calves. We sold one in Feb. with some updated shots, and the other two were purchased this past Christmas for fall breeders to go to work.

Just curious, as we have two calves that should (and probably will be) shown, but need to be out working. They can be viewed here, but just wondering which sales cycle road they will go down.

I am getting updated photos of these two in a month, so it will be interesting.

I will be interested in other breeder's takes.

I know this isn't really an answer to your question or the purpose of this thread. But, what is the pedigree of your Casino bull? Do you have some more pictures of him and what are you asking?

No problem OK, I haven't gotten a lot of comments on the thread anyway  (unfortunately).

The Casino bull is out of our Cassie donor and ArSuLu Legacy. His full sister is our top heifer on our website, and his full brother is Cedric (also on our website under sold bulls). Cedric sold to a great family in OK ironically, but he was 16 months old when he was purchased.

Casino is currently priced at $3,250 and well worth it. He is TH and PHA clean, and an outcross to most pedigrees. I don't have a bunch of other photos, but I do have this rear shot.

Hope this helps.

Hey Jock,

The white bull is a JPJ out of our top donor, Rainbow Snowflower (which has produced over $100,000 in offspring for us). She can be seen on our website at www.diamondmshorthorns.com under the female section.

We think that he will be an all-American for us. Although the new owner will have the choice, we would like to hellp promote him this summer at the PACE shows.

His full sister just sold to Florida for $3,500 and is listed under the Seedstock for sale section.

We are located just outside of St. Louis, but are in a perfect location for trucks heading in all directions.

He is priced at $3,500. I have had a lot of interest in him since I posted this, but don't have a check or a committment yet.

Let me know if you have any more questions. He is a frame 6.5-7.0, so he is not a pud like a lot of the JPJ calves are. Snowflower is also a long bodied and long fronted cow, so that also helped erase JPJ other fault.

O0 <beer>The white calf really oughta go on semi-commercial blacks for blue roans-because he has enough of the old blood (along with the KABA-which has alot of old maine-leading to spots or black)to throw em.
