Things just keep getting better, now Arnold is trying to get a 1.5 percent sales tax increase. All this will do is cause retail sales and large ticket items sale to drop so in the end they will still have less money to waste. Can anybody explain why the first cuts they make are in schools, fire and police but they never trim the fat from within.

vc, They pulled that same thing here in Colorado. This time around, our county's 4-H program was on the chopping block. That and old folk's homes, health care, fire and police departments, and other "sure fire" heart string tuggers. That was for a 1% sales tax increase to "reduce" our county's 9 million dollar debt. This would have given them 300 some million to blow away and REALLY go in debt. 1a, as it was called, was defeated along the lines of 80% to 15%. Basically, the people told the county, "We're tightening our belts in these lean times, and so should you!"

I think the Govenator has jumped on the Obamanation and the Clintonistas bandwagon.  And I quote, "Paying taxes is a very patriotic thing to do", Obama.

I am with you on the Fair Tax.  I would love it if Indiana would do away with proprety taxes and raise the sales tax.  would shift the burden to more people.  then people wouldn't have to worry about a sheriffs sale if the didn't pay their property taxes.

Mitch Daniels came in and cut some fat in our state government.  Its low man on the totem poll when it comes to cuts and the politicans are at the top!

I don't know how you Californians do it.

1.5 % is a pretty big raise.  We are getting raise our sales tax 1%, with the extra revenue generated going to reduce property tax, which is high in our county

Property taxes are a load of crap....  It's really taxation without representation...  There was a reason that our fouding fathers only allowed property owners to vote.  It prevents people from abusing the system...You can't vote yourself something for nothing.

We don't own property in America.  We buy the right to rent it from the government.  Quit paying your taxes and find out who owns your property!

renters will claim they pay property taxes through rent.

but i say, not in rent controlled areas.

i also say not in abodes where they don't take care of things.

i would like to see a line item on rent.

one line for rent, one line for property taxes.  payable twice a year, just like for reals.

OH, this list is a little deceiving.  I know for a fact that Oklahoma's State Sales Tax is 4.5%.  The 8.15% listed is the average State+County+City sales tax.  Our rate in my community is 9.25%, 4.5 State, 4.5 City & .25 County.  Our City Council is considering an additional 1% for 10 years which would be dedicated to the municipal hospital.  Taxes are a necessary means of revenue and I happen to believe Sales Taxes to be the most fair to all; the more you spend, the more you pay.  In a tourist area, your visitors support the community.  What could be better?

We are very fortunate here to have extremely low property taxes, which are the primary revenue stream for our counties to support their roads and bridges; also the county revenue stream to our public schools.  Our county rate is .00925 per $1000 of assessed value (real property only).  There are no Ad Valoem taxes on personal property such as furnishings, allpliances, cars, boats, tractors, etc.

We in Kansas had our property taxes reduced by the addition of 1.25% in sales tax. It took the politicians all of six years to erase those savings and now we are paying even more. And guess what they are floating around again? Some level of taxation is required for any society but one should always say no. In the end they will get what they want and more.
