Hereford bulls sold to $70,000 and 180 grossed $1.36 million to average $7543 at the Hereford National at Wodonga, Vic. The 226 registered buyers pushed the average up by 14% on the 2010 figure when 139 bulls averaged $6644.
The $70,000 is the highest price ever paid at the Wodonga complex beating the $62,500 paid for a Charnock bull in 2008.
Second top price of $62,000 was also for a Glendan Park bull, Empire E002, also by Cootharaba Magnum. He was purchased by Yarram Park, Willaura, Vic, and Cootharaba, Roma, Qld.
Sale statistics were:
120 Hereford bulls sold to $70,000 to gross $1,031,000 to average $8592 (up $1010 on 2010) in a 90% clearance.
60 Poll Hereford bulls sold to $18,000 to gross $326,750 to average $5446 (up $637 on 2010) in an 81% clearance.
Overall 180 bulls grossed $1,357,750 to average $7543 on an 87% clearance.
That was the official stats. Older horned bulls were harder to sell as were polled bulls but quality of polls was down with their major national sale in 4 weeks.

I've always wondered, are the large sale prices in Australia legit?  I know they tend to be advertised a bunch and just wonder if they're legit sales or if it's like the $300,000 Angus heifers over here.

Jeff some yes some no. There was a rumor that one of the studs that bought the bull had a large credit for a bull that did not work. Interesting that the stud that won most classes at the show the day before did not have as good of a sale but still averaged $18000.
I also hear that the angus bull that sold of a record $910000 has already out sold that in semen. Not to me figures are the best and only good in that bull IMO

I highly doubt they sold the semen for $20  a dose if they paid that much for him

The big money at the Hereford sales here is rarely from a commercial breeder. Studstock whiteface breeders are very good at supporting each other at their National sales here, and often get a syndicate together to do so. Both top priced bulls at Wodonga were bought in syndicate. And interestingly, the top four bulls were all by Cootharaba Magnum (a full brother to the $70,000 was equal third top, at about third the price).

As far as the $91,000 Angus bull, I can assure you they are not flogging his semen for $20 a straw.

Aussie: those quotes sound very familiar! :p

Even a paltry 3500-6000 would seem like alot of money to a cow calf deal JMO. O0

Yes those quotes come from Hereford Aust sorry should I give you credit. Did not see you there but it was that cold hard to recognise any body all rugged up
Mark if you removed the few extremes from the sale the average would be more the $3500 to $6000 very much in the reach of the commercial man when 12 month old feeder calves are making $1000
