With what was at Denver with the Hereford look-a-likes and purebreds. Are they the next players in the club calf industry, like the shorthorn and pluses were back 5 or 10 years ago.

simple: color is coming.. anything different than black-0- people who are not connected to the commercial sector- are tired of showing black.. and want somthing catchy..

I think the biggest thing making Herf popluar-- is the lack of a "quality" steer purebred market-- and people see this color pattern as dominate- and easy to reproduce in a crossbred package.. meaning, it to be easier and quicker to get to endpoing of destined greatness.

As far as I know the only part of the Herf color pattern that seems to be really dominant is the white face, I dont think its the popularity of color that is making the Herfs more popular.  Because most of those people that get excited about color want the really wild or flashy color patterns.  I think there have always been some good Herf marked calves out there, I think people are just starting to use them more because there are actually judges out there now that arent afraid to use something that isnt black, and people have seen some of these good Herfs.  I have been hearing for several months that he will try and use a Herf to win Ft Worth this year, and from what my buddies that are there have said the Champ Polled steer is for sure good enough to win it all.

Herefords are known as the feed efficient breed. And as we all know, feed efficiency equals more money the producer's pocket.

show steer people, who hold their steers until over 2 years age- to stay at 1300 lbs-- spend 10s of 1000s on them initially...

THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT PRODUCER'S POCKETBOOKS OR FEED EFFICIENCY!

I am very impressed with many of the Hereford cattle coming out lately. IMO, they have done more to improve their cattle, in recent years, than any other breed. Some of the Polled Hereford bulls sales in these parts last spring were the best sales they have had in years, and it was justified by the quality of the cattle. I'm not sure if they are the next "kings" but I think they could grab a bigger part of the pie.

Stock was reserve in his Division...so he wont be winning the show.  I am not there so I havent seen them all, I have just heard for several months that people thought he would use a hereford to win it all if there was one there good enough to let him do it, and from what I hear the Polled is that good.  Will be interesting to see what happens in the drive!

I don't know that Herefords will be the next KING, but we are finally getting some cattle in large enough quantity that are good enough that commercial cattlemen are looking at Hereford as a real viable option. Besides black baldie cows are some of the best you can have. There are so many black cattle out there that are really not good quality cattle and to many fakes claiming to be pure bred or high percentage cattle and the new owner gets them home and they don't work. Last year I went to one of the local Angus bull sales just to see how the sale went and help a friend that had a few head consigned, I was amazed at some of the bulls people were selling that should have had the knife taken to them. If I tried to sale a Hereford that was as poor as some of those supposedly PB Angus I would have had to hide in embarrassment. There are a whole bunch of people that have jumped into the pure bred market because it looks fun and have purchased cows that were probably culls to get started and they take cousin Joe for help with them because they really don't know anything about cattle to begin with and 2 years later they are selling bulls. Good, Bad or indifferent they are marketing inferior cattle.

Don't get me wrong most of the people who are getting into the cattle business are trying to do a good job and are being conscientious about what they are breeding but the few that aren't need to learn what the knife is for.

There Are some Herefords arround with real merit, and they still carry a trademark. unlike most of the other breeds who have chosen to look like an Angus.Herefords, Shorthorns andmost of the Charolais business carry a trademark in terms of colour.  most others do not.
