how do you put more butt on a steer or heifer

both our steer and heifer always get the same comment about needing to show more power. what the heck does that mean exactly from what I can tell they need more butt or width in the hips I am assuming that's what the judges are taking about . feeding them 12% protein 4.5% fat and top dressing with powerfuel and champion drive any other things I could do to make them look like Nicki minaj lol

our heifer has been in 3 shows . and every one of them the judge has said if I had to pick a heifer to put in a pasture and raise calves he would pick her but then give it to a club calf looking heifer I don't get it. and they usually follow up with her needing to show more power for there reason

Genetics and hair. its really hard to feed that kind of width into them. If it means anything to you, isn't the end goal to put one in the pasture raising one better then herself anyways? We have heard that same comment plenty of times as well. Just keep moving forward and when you breed her look for a bull that may add some power to her.

If they're prospect calves, be patient. Those market heifer types always win as babies because they are so stout. Wait to spring and then start showing and keep going to late summer. Get your heifer bred and let her belly down. You can make width and power seem like its there with enough belly and rib shape. But in the late spring early summer is where the market heifers run out of gas and the breeding heifers start kicking their ass! as for needing more power your not going to put it on a heifer, but i make make sure her fiber content is between 15-18% to give her rib and belly and then she will appera a notch more powerful. just my opinion from my experiences.

she has no shortage of belly I think it actually makes her but look narrow for how much spring of rib she has I will get a picture tomorrow and post it for some opinions on her

as for our steer he has zero hair right now. but when I got him in the spring he had nice thick hair so it should be good by our spring show

How much %CP should a prospect market heifer be fed? What about breeding? The feed I am using has 12% but I am not sure that's high enough.

I have been told the and muscle in the hind quarters to walk them uphill for a while everyday. I started doing it and thats when my heifer who lacked really gained some butt.
