How To Get A Smoke

I have a Braunvieh female that I am getting ready to breed. I am breeding her to a Braunvieh bull first but I would like to do some crossbreeding with her later on. If anyone is unfamiliar with Braunvieh coloring, they basically are a mouse gray with a white ring around their nose like a Brown Swiss.

I would love to get a nice smoke out of her but I am not all that great with color genetics. I know it it possible to get one given her coloring, but I'm not sure if I should breed her to a smoke colored bull or some other color. If any of you are good with color genetics please help me out!!

BTW -- That picture is not my female. I just posted a pic from google of a Braunvieh so you could see the coloring. My female is the same shade as the one in the picture, though.

I'm not certain you can get a '' true Smoke'' out of a full blood..Going back full blood may give you your closest thing to a smokey typr color... there are homozygous black Braunvieh bulls out there so you may think about breeding her to one of these bulls and then if you get a heifer putting her on a charolias bull??? Maybe someone will have something better to offer.. G-Luck

That makes sense. I am breeding her to a black Braunvieh bull so I'm hoping to get a female.

It's hard to predict color with braunvieh cattle they do nor have a dilution gene like charolais, they are more like brahmans where they carry light pigmentation but don't dilute often times u will get a strange color or a brindle. But not saying a smokwould be outta the question

Breed her to a La Muneca Braunvieh or one of their Simbraviehs! I am very impressed with the Simbraviehs I have seen! They are amazing and THICK!

I have been looking into some of La Muneca's Simbraviehs.... they do look really nice. But I want to make sure that whatever I have it is show ring quality as that is what my goal is-- to have cattle that perform in both the ring and field. I just wish it was easier to predict color with Braunviehs!! I am planning on breeding her to Indian Outlaw at least once. I think it would be an interesting pair.

I agree with the La Muneca Simbrauviehs but there are probably better places to go for a Braunvieh bull... Since we are on the subject, the main problem with braunvieh cattle in the show world is that they just don't have a place.  The steers have to show AOB and don't fit there and while the heifers have a breed they just don't match up in the exotic drive... Carlos is on the right track with the Simbraunvieh breed...

Trust me I know just how frustrating it is facing the fact that Braunvieh don't fit. I've shown Braunvieh steers all my life and even though I never got past those nice crossbreeds I was always satisfied with my Braunvieh and it's the same way with the heifer right now......I don't expect her to win win win, but I do still like to compete. Where I live the competition in exotic breeds is not as tough as further west so I like to think that if I do some good breedings I could get a nice showy female but of course I never know 

That is why I am going to do purebred breeding as well as crossbreeding...so that I can have some variation. I'd just like to get some cool colors along the way  ;D
