Need some information and help with the breeds, I am not very familar with the breeds myself but a friend of mine has interest, your advice is greatly appreciated!

1) A friend of mine has interest in the Galloway breed, can you Reg. Belted Galloways and Galloway in the same association or is there two seperate associations for the breeds?
2) Which are better for a grassfed beef operation? Belted galloway? Galloway?
3) Does anyone know of a breeder who would be selling a few bred heifers? Price?

Thanks Much

One of our Sure Champ customers has been sending in some pictures of some really good looking Belted Galloways. Kay Weaber [email protected] They had some Champions at The Big E show, and World Beef Expo. She might be able to help you out.

Harley Blegen, North Dakota. AKA. Hab here on Steer Planet has some very good Galloway cattle IMO.
Bobby Wellner, Powell, WY. I think that he raised Eye Candy & Bold Maneuver has Galloway cattle.

The American Galloway Breeders Association registers all three Galloway breeds.  Solid colored Galloways, Belted Galloways and White Galloways.    www.americangalloway.com

The majority of the Belted Galloways in the US are registered with the Belted Galloway Society.  Most of these are inelligible to be registered in the AGBA, as they have been bred up through other breeds.  The AGBA has always maintianed a closed herdbook.  The Belted Galloways and the White Galloways were breeds created using the Galloway.  They are registered in seperate herd books.

Most breeders have females for sale, but there has been increased demand over the last few years.  High quality black females are in high demand and short supply.

The vast majority of Belted Galloway are purebred for 5+ generations.  Most breeders absolutely demand it.
To be PB, the animals must also be properly marked.

Upbred and mis-marked cattle can be registered in the Appendix book.  They are typically less valuable than PB animals for breeding operations.  Mismarked and upbred bulls cannot be registered.

There is a strong network of breeders who supply grassfed beef to their customers.
I sold a bull last summer to a breeder who told me he averages $5000 in gross sales for each steer he markets in the Chicagoland area.  That's about $10/pound based on a 500 pound carcass and 950 pound liveweight steer.

His steers are grass fed 100% and about 20-24 months at time of slaughter.  They typically grade low choice.  The meat is very well received.

Younger Beltie females are not that hard to find although breds are often scarce.  Weanling heifers run about $1250.  Last breds I knew of were $2500(not sure if they sold at that price) I thought that was kind of high.

Not sure where you are located, but I have three open heifers available and can also help you find others in your area.  The US Beltie Society has a good website at Beltie.org    They have a system in place to help you find Beltie cattle.

Good luck to you!
