one of our heifers ran into some tin and cut her leg bad between her know and shoulder last night  . we had it stitched up this morning  but its has a lot of swelling . is there something that I can do for that and what do you recommend to keep it from getting infected . I am putting swat fly ointment on it twice a day for now

Make sure she got some kind of antibiotic injection.    Good old penicillin works pretty good on injuries.    She also could be given something for the inflammation .. what depends on if she is bred or not and what your vet would prescribe.  Otherwise.. hydrotherapy.. just run water on it 10-20 minutes couple times a day.

Did a vet stitch her up?  Are you sure he or she did not give her something?

Is she moving around?  How about eating and drinking?

Be careful using a hose on an open wound.  Depending on the source, some water contains bacteria that can start an infection.  I would follow your Vets orders...
