Since Christmas is approaching, I thought it would be interesting to ask what the best, craziest, most meaningful or most interesting present you recieved for christmas was! Or the most memorable calf that was born, since it is Steer Planet  ;D  <cowboy>

Merry Christmas (angel)

I got my wife 7 days before Christmas and got my 3rd child (only daughter) one day before our 10th wedding anniversary so I think both of those are pretty good early Christmas presents !!!!!!! ;D

I'd agree! Those sound like some of the best presents!  :)  My parents were married on the 21st!

Well, since everyone seems shy  ;) I'll say that one year one of my favorite heifers had a little heifer that we had to help pull. She had a white bow on her forehead like she was all wrapped up for christmas!  ;D

A big book with all of Jane Austen's novels in it. (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility etc)
My oldest was born on Dec 18 and my hubby went out and bought me one of those chairs that 's on gliders with the foot stool etc. That was a perfect gift that year!!!

Well, get the kleenex...mine happened this year. I show horses and I showed an older pony for he past few years this year was amazing we were the the number 2 overall pony in the country(like second place for show hfr of the year). Well Wednesday he came down with pneumonia, and sadly Friday he quit eating and died that evening. Needless to say my Xmas has not been great. This summer I was also training a pony for a breeder. She had been tying to think of something to do for me since I had done so well her pony and dealt with a pot of crap from.our national office.  Eventually she came up with the idea to just give me the filly I had worked with.
She called Saturday to tell me that she wanted me to have her, we were not planning on telling anyone about losing my pony until after the holiday, but he had been sick a couple weeks before and asked how he was doing so then we had to tell her what had happened. Eventhough the timing was poor in her mind, she didn't realize that giving me the filly really gave me something else to focus on, helping to make my grief just a little easier to deal with. While she won't replace my old trusty rusty, it really meant a lot that someone recognized.my hard work even if the timing couldn't have been worse.

RIP tigger...the wonderpony

We received an interesting Christmas present this year.  We had a heifer that was about 240 days pregnant and she calved a set of twin bull calves.  Of course they didn't live, so that part is pretty sad, but that was our first set of twins and how ironic that it was on Christmas day of all days.  To go along with the "favorite mating" thread; this mating was the one I was looking forward to the most.  The calves were JSAR Titan out of a 5/8 Maine heifer. Just out of curiosity we weighed each calf, they weighed 40lbs each.  So, not exactly a super happy memory, but a memory none the less.  Better luck next time we are hoping.  Oh and if anyone has any insite on why this can happen please share your info with me.

I'm sorry about the losses that some of you have had to face. From growing up on a farm and raising bottle calves, I know that loss is hard. I glad you were able to make the best of it though!

Willow, sometimes a cow can be under stress due to weather or other environmental conditions and this can cause her to calve early. This has happened to me with one of my favorite cows in the summer when it got super hot and her twins were born dead. I also had a cow that had a calf in 2 to 3 feet of snow and wasn't due for a few weeks. We had to bring the calf inside for a few days! If there were any severe weather changes, this could have caused you animal to calve early. I also think I have heard of certain plants that can cause this to happen as well. Sometimes it just happens, and it's always a bummer! I'm sorry to hear about your losses! :(

Also, certain mineral or nutritional deficiencies can cause cows to calve early if they are severe enough.

Simmgal, I have thought about those things because we do have a few plants in our part of the world that can really do a number on them.  Weather, but it has been so mild.  Nutritional deficiency, she just doesn't fit the bill.  Just a mystery.  Thank you for the info though and as the saying goes "if you have livestock, you have dead stock".  We aren't giving up on her yet.  So we will see what she  does for us next year (seems so far away at this point :) ).  Good thread, so much to be thankful for.
