One of my kids has a Walks Alone steer we are shooting for State Fair (Sept 1st).  He is right on track as far as weight, and hair.  I want to soften him up to the touch with a little more cover over his ribs.  He has another 45 days or so but I don't want to wait too long.  I would rather have one fat a little too early than get there too late.

He is eating about 25 pounds of feed which consists of 4 pounds of Receiving Chow, 2 pounds of ADM Fire Extinguisher (sort of like Shag), and the rest is a Show Mix of corn, cottonseed hulls, a little sweetener, and some mineral/vitamin mix.  He gets all the hay he can eat between 11pm and 8am when he goes back in the cooler.

I am thinking of top dressing some "liquid fat", but am concerned that it will heat him up to the point he will lose his hair or at best stop growing hair. This steer is pretty stout, and he will contend IF we can get the hair that he needs.  He is pretty coarse in his shoulder, and if I had to pick between the fat cover and the hair, I would pick the hair in a second.

Please throw me whatever advice you have.

last year i had a steer with the same problem, needed more cover. poured about 60cc of corn oil on his feed once a day, it really helped him add cover and it made his hair shinier.

vc on this site highly recommended using about 2 pounds per day stabilized rice bran on our steer who is showing about the same time as yours.  Will put some finishing cover on them without burning the hair. We are giving it a try right now along with a little corn oil as well.

Thank you for your input.  I appreciate it.

I had someone send me a PM on this, which I thought was really interesting.  He said that fat sources in liquid form will actually "waterproof" or "seal" the dry matter that it is mixed with and actually lower the conversion rate of the feed that is being supplemented.  In other words, you gain some fat in the liquid form, and you lose some fat by sealing the fat that is in the feed.

He recommended Power Fuel which I believe to be a Purina product.  It is a dry fat.

I have never used it, but I know that the person has......with GREAT success.
