Everyone knows of the time tested advantages of the proven cross of a Hereford bull onto an Angus cow mating, with the resulting baldy calf.  Nuf said.

My question is...if you have the "right" angus cow and the "right" Hereford bull, can you produce really good club calf cows?  Or is it impossible for these two breeds to produce the right "type" cow for club calf production.  I am considering trying the cross and would like all the input I can get.

I have a cow that I think is pretty good and have flushed previously.  I purchased her from Tim Ohlde.  She is about 15/16 angus or higher.  She is a OCC Legend x OCC Jetstream X OCC Glory and in an approx.  4.5 frame.  Thick, deep, and good fronted, with good conformation.  I am considering flushing her to a Hereford bull.

I am looking for an older proven Hereford bull.  A rugged built bull with some maternal behind him.  No more than a 6.5 frame, preferably a 6.0 frame.  He needs to have a big top and butt, deep body, medium to heavy bone, good front, and a big foot.  I know there were some "Horned" Herefords of old, from the West, that fit this description however, I am not a Hereford breeder and not knowledgeable in the breed and their older bulls.

That's why I came to you all for help and advice.

I will appreciate whatever comments you may have.  Thanks,

I have no experience with breeding Hereford cattle but I will give some input.  Almost all of the Hereford steers I have looked at this spring, that really caught my eye were out of "KB Made Right".  Most were really smooth functional cattle.  He is not a register Hereford, but will make them look that way.  Made Right sired the Champion Hereford at the 2008 Ft Worth Show.  Anyone have any other information on him?

I have known some folks to use a bull called FOCUS. ORRELL Herefords of Oklahoma owns him. They have other good herefords as well. They have a web page on showsteers.com. I know they produce club calf herefords[if you like herefords] to die for. Have also heard of using the De Shazer herefords from TEXAS. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the responses thus far!

I am looking for  a Hereford bull to mate to Angus cows to make F1 replacement females.  Then breed those F1's to club calf sires down the road to make steers.  I am not trying to breed a Hereford bull onto an Angus cow for a first time cross and make club calves.

Thanks,

I know you are looking for older proven bulls but those two new Herfs that Trausch's are promoting, Cyrus and Baton Rouge, fit your description perfectly. They are nice.

I am thinking along the same lines you are. I thought I would take my chances and see if I could get some "show style" calves in the first cross. Purchased straws of a bull called Stocker from Genex. He is a registered hereford, but he looks like a simmental, complete with the red goggles.

why didn't you ask tim when you were there.  he's got some herefords.
Back when I purchased her I was not serious about  breeding her to a Hereford.  At that time (about 3 1/2 years ago), Tim said he knew of some "older" Hereford bulls that he thought might work but his opinion was that they were too big framed.  However, if you know Tim, he does not like anything over a 5.5 frame score bull.  That is also why I bought this small framed cow.  She was a fall born yearling when I bouglht her at Tim's and she was one of his smaller framed hiefers in the Fall Calf Crop.  Maybe I need to give him a call.  But, I would still like some more opinions.

DeShazer had a dispersal, but there should be some good cattle coming from those same lines from Double L Cattle Company -http://doublelcattle.com/

worthabit - did you buy the stocker semen based on the promotional picture that Genex had taken by sneed? I'm not sure that is an accurate representation of the bull.

I agree with VJ, Trausch bulls are impressive (and actually moler sons I can appreciate) plus their dam is a nice cow/ was a nice show heifer.

I bought more based on their description that he will add style, but the picture didn't hurt... What does he REALLY LOOK LIKE? Has the picture been touched up?

Speaking of new unproven bulls that look good and have a good genotype...What do you think about Currency another Moler son that Randy Mullinex raised?

SEA, I have seen the Currency bull several times in the last 6 months, including shortly after he was weaned. He looked good then, and he looks good now in my opinion. Obviously he is not a "proven bull", but he also is out of a very good cow, as are the Trausch bulls. Quite a few options out there--I guess it depends somewhat on your emphasis for this "first cross"--maternal vs. thickness and/or showring look, as well as truly proven vs. young prospect. Isn't picking bulls fun?!?

Cyrus and Currency are both pretty cool Moler sons. I'm definitely not a Hereford producer, but I look at a lot of show cattle, and if you can find a SOUND Moler, they are among some of the best show cattle out there, of any breed.  Does anyone know of any Purple Milsap calves on the ground yet? His picture makes him look like one that could flat produce Hereford show steers.

J3cattleco's Big Jake bull was impressive at Denver, even though he's not registered either.  He could be the ticket on Angus females.

I have seen a few Milsap calves--very nicely designed, probably more moderate than some of the "Moler-bred" cattle. It certainly appears he will put a nice look on his calves.

worthabit-

I have not see the stocker bull, but based on what I have heard these pictures are a much more accurate view of him.

Below, in 3rd, is a bull that I like much better. He is WLB Global and can be found on Semex.

Thanks for the pictures (I think!) I didn't pay much attention to Global because of his poor epds for milk and TM even though they talk up his maternal side. I guess we'll see how stocker turns out and if I'm happy with the black baldies maybe I'll give Global a try. I only bought 5 straws so we're not talking large numbers.

Brad Hook promoted a hereford bull HARD DRIVE might try finding something out about him,he looks pretty showy

Hard Drive would sure put some bone and look in them, along with some grow.......maybe not as clubby as some of the Mullenix or Kris Black or Orrell type Herefords, and Hard Drive died a couple years ago and I'm not sure what Muller's are pricing the semen at.  My father-in-law has some Wide Load's (bull of Mike Sorenson and partners)  that looked pretty good.  Big boned and footed, cowy and cool lookin' out of Simmy cows.  Maybe a bit narrow based, but not bad.
