Looking for Upcoming Show Steer

Hi,
I am starting to look for my 2014/2015 show steer, as this year 1/3 bull caves we had born, is the only steer I'll have to show, and he had a septic joint...so if he doesn't go lame before 1200 pounds I will be lucky...*fingers crossed, all is good right now*. Anyways if you can help me out here is what I am looking for:

• Late March/April born
• Something that will have the ability to properly finish by end of July
• Crossbred or Registered is fine
• As close to Michigan as possible
• Will be interested in online sales, but would like to purchase before October 1st
• Being 16 I don't have a whole lot to spend, I don't want to spend more than $2000

Not trying to bring you down at all but I truely believe you are going to have a hard time finding a quality animal for under 2K this year. Weaned calves are bringing 1500 at the sale barn this year. I know that for me any of my calves are starting at 2K if they are halter broke because Im basically paying myself 500 bucks for halter breaking which is very little when you think about the amount of time spent halter breaking one. Like I said those are my opinions and Im certainly not trying to get your hopes up.

I bought a heifer last fall for 1350 on cw I bought my steer this year for 1800. It can be done just gotta look.

I feel on the online sales you will be able to find one for 2000. the only thing is, I think your going to have to focus on finding a green calf that has all the parts just behind in condition that everyone is overlooking. ( that means open up the sale site, then scroll to the bottom and proceed up the sale page). a lot of good calves get sold this way because people overlook them because they havent reached their best day at 5 months old

This is really pretty good advice.  Don't be afraid to follow the more successful seller's online sale as well.  A pretty darn good "green" calf can look even worse next to a bunch of chubby hairy and ready to sell calves that are all bringing upper 4 digits.  Those calves suffer in comparison, but are really pretty good calves.

To add to this, I never buy a calf that I don't think will improve every day I have it. That usually means buying a good pedigreed good made skinny one. Some skinny calves are like that because they're poor doers, but a lot of them need some tlc. Find a breeder or trader with a good reputation and be up front with them.

To get you started, I'd try to get in touch with the Becraft family in Michigan (jalebe here on SP). Super people and I'm sure they'd work with you on getting you the right calf.
