What's everyones thoughts on the PB Maine bull, Cigar?  He was a 1996 Model, Witch Doctor Son pictured below. Reg.# 227947

The first calf that our Donor GVC Whitney had was a cigar son called Black Smoker.  He sold on the Power Genetics sale for around $ 7,000.  He was never really promoted and looking back may have been before his time.  Voglers purchased him and used him as a herd sire and sold a little semen on him.  Dennis Garwood of Green Valley used him pretty heavily.  On his sale just the other day,  Black Smoker appeared the most as the MGS in the pedigrees of his bulls.  The top 3 selling bulls by 3 different sires were all out of Black Smoker daughters.  One of them a Sooner son and the top seller, I believe was purchased by Lautner Farms.

My question to those familiar with Cigar,  what are your thoughts on him?  Does he produce moderate offspring?  What are the females lke in production out of him?

Tony

I haven't seen too many of them recently but I had one in production for about 5-6 years.  She didn't milk worth a hoot and was plenty big but she threw some of the thickest made heaviest bone calves we've ever had.  She went down the road b/c she couldn't milk.  If it wasn't for creep and calves robbing milk from other cows I don't know some of her calves would have made it.

Remember seeing quite a few by Cigar or out of Cigar daughters , I remember them being huge boned and hairy (especially leg) and chunky made for the time.At that time freaky necked and look was more important than rib shape and stoutness so probably why you don't see more. They were heavy and mature looking for their age it seemed like.Seemed like Rick Fry has quite a bit of Cigar in his blood lines .

We have a Cigar cow and I really like her. She milks real well and has a good calf everytime. She has  alot of frame but she is out of a purebred Limmi cow so I think that might be where the size comes from. She throws really large calve but she never has trouble her calves come real easy.

rsc, what are some bloodlines that you like with milk?

what's the thickest line you've seen that you like with milk.

put it another way.  what lines do you like that have milk.

you should put milk in whitney before she's gone if you like her.

from what i've seen out of her, you keep resisting to put that in.

which is harder to get, some milk, or some thickness to sell as a terminal?

what's thick enough or enough milk to carry on to breed to a thick no milk sire.

seems like you might be going down too narrow of a squeeze chute.

my uncle has a cigar cow that he got from some people in Montana. They cow always produced some of his best calves. She always milked enough for use but wasn't one of his best milkers. She makes a good cow, that had a decent show career.

We used him a lot in the late 90's had some nice calves probably the best steer I ever raised came from cigar was showed 27 times and won his class 25 and had numerous banners I had some heifers out of him they were good cows wish I still had them I sold all my cows when in college to keep the loans down may not have been my smartest financial decision to late now though

I may be just over tired this morning, but wasn't there TWO sires named Cigar back in the 90's??

I remember this one, but I was also thinking of another sire that was out of either Draftpick lines or another really popular bull -- Ceasar I believe.

I may be way off here, some one update my memory -- sure seems as though I remember two of them.

Been a long night I guess. First Star Power calf on the ground -- so to speak! It was a 2 hours ordeal, got it out, and it is alive -- LARGE has a new meaning here now. Long story -- I hope no one has any more hfrs bred to him, at least nothng with Heat WAve in them, you'll wish you never did it!

I have one Cigar cow and she is adequate at best on milk.  She is out of a good milking sim/angus and although she is one that always gets asked about in the pasture, her calves have not been so far.  Coming with her 3rd this year to Point Taken, so I hope I can change my attitude on her.  Frye has used a bunch of Cigar.  Seems like the ones I have seen and liked went back to Meyer derivatives, which I think would compliment him.  His bull Sandman is a Cigar son on a meyer cow and he is making really nice cattle. Cigar was probably ahead of his times in terms of moderation and softness, but may have been passed by in todays world.  I would use him on heavy milking cows with a limitied amount of maine in them.  IMHO

A few years ago at the Iowa Beef Expo Maine sale it seemed that 2/3 of the bulls were out of Cigar.  He was that popular--today you hardly hear anything about him!!  He did seem to throw some thick made calves.
