I have heard 3rd hand accounts of people manufacturing cattle.  I have heard of one procedure where a steer or bulls brisket is laid open and sewed up to make them look cleaner fronted. I have heard of people sealing stainless steel into cattle to improve them.  Of course airing and oiling has also been disscussed. Seems like the brisket deal would be a fairly harmless way to be deceptive. Are these things a urban myth or is it done? thanks in advance.

I think in any aspect of the world this holds true:

If there is money - and potentially lots of money - in it, then it's been tried.  It's certainly not limited to cattle shows and promotion.

If  we did not participate at any level of competition at any sport or endeavor simply because others cheat, then then we have missed the point of it all perhaps as much as those who do.

It's been probably 10 years since I know of this, so I don't know if the service is still available:  There is/was a certain Dentist in OK who could make a steer's teeth anyway you needed them!

Very appropriately stated!  (thumbsup)

Maybe this topic should quietly disappear before the wrong group of people find it and bring unwanted bad publicity to our industry.

So we should just keep quite and let it continue?

If those you want to keep this from ever look this way they will find it (as well as others stuff). And there will be those who will ask why we didn't do something about when we found out.

Heard of the brisket surgery thing, has it been done, think these kind of things are monitored quite closely nowadays.  Think the first time I heard of this was probably 20 years ago.
Do know of a guy that actually took the time to krazy glue a brisket up, but that would of been in the early to mid 1980's.

I think i heard it had somehbting to do with age of the steer.

Market steers used to have to have their baby teeth, or at some shows they could have one or two  permanents but they couldn't be "up in wear", meaning no higher than the surrounding baby teeth (which is usually only a few days after they come in).  Most of the major shows (at least in the south) did away with those rules quite awhile ago.

If he hadn't lost his teeth they wouldn't have been a problem.

aj, why do you start this shit, you have been in this business long enough to have heard all of the horror stories, I don't understand what thrill you get from continuing to rehash the same old trash, why not try and point out the positives in this business instead of trying to continually tear it down.

What does "airing' and "oiling" a steer mean?

If you really need to know, use the search feature and you can read all you want.

To Torch, I didn't start this subject....someone else did. I just asked a simple question......

We are new to showing with my daughter and I am sure things have changed since I showed 20 years ago....We have attended four shows around SW Iowa and SE Nebraska and have met many great people and I have to agree with Jill there
are many good things in this business...
