Okay go to www.circlefcattle.com am planning on buying a heifer from this sale the lots I'm interested in are

Whic one out of those do you think is the best and could fit a $2500 dollar budget? If you could give me top four.

Just from past history you'll be hard pressed to find one on that budget.  They go high.  Anything out of there donor cow Laiyla will be good.  She's awesome.  We had a bull out of her and loved him.  Husband thought she was one of the best cows he's ever seen.  I maybe wrong, but in past there heifers averaged over $5000 each.

i wouldn't consider this advice, but of the pictures, i like lot 2.  she's not as fancy as the rest, shorter necked, seems more softer made and carries her thickness well.  she might be a little short bodied compared to the others, but might be misleading cause she's deeper and shorter necked.  of the one's you picked, i liked 7.

this catalog threw me for a loop i must say.  kinda confused, might just be their age.

been noticing berry creek more and more.  after reading the catalog, 2 might go for money.  sorry.

small print says all were tested for PHA/TH and will be available sale day, so i would make 2 lists, unless that doesn't concern you.

beware of averages, particularly with a high top seller, so don't be discouraged just yet.  i looked through the catalog and i didn't see anything remotely annoying.
think about birth weights and who you would breed them too as well as oppossed to just showing her.

Your not asking for much, are you?  I would say most of those will bring more like $10k than $5k

Looking at those pictures I would agree with justme, I do not think that you will buy any of those for $2500, if you go on up to $3500 I think you may be able to snag one.

I called the guy who does the sale and he said that the reason there average was so high was because they had two sell for over 40,000 thousand last year he said the rest averaged between 1500 and up they all start at a base bid of 1000

way to take the initiative totten.  tell that person your goals, limitations.  if you are for smaller shows mainly and just want to go to a big one if you win your local show, tell them that.  do you want something so you can have steers later, and want to breed to heat wave, irish whiskey etc, then that screens out a few for you.  do exactly what you asked here, ask for a list of 5 or so and if they can provide a PHA/TH update via email to you so you can prepare a little ahead on sale day.

Be cautious....I didn't see many come close to that $2500 in the past 2-3 years.  You may get a carrier for your price range...maybe or the bottom end.  I don't like to discourage anyone, but I think you can find a really really nice calf in your price range other places.  Its like cars...sometimes you pay for a name.

Don't think I'm bashing them....they've sold some good cattle.  I just want you to get more for your money and not to settle.

The best advise I can give you is call Jason Farmer and ask him which of the lots he thinks you would be able to get bought for 2500 or less.  From what I remember this is one of the hottest sales in the Maine breed and you won't get any of the good ones bought that cheap.  Let him give you a realist list to select from and then start your process of narrowing those down.

Good Advice Jill.  You are correct they will let you know the ones that will sell in your price range.  We were there last weekend.  Lots of nice heifers.

I guess Jill has hit it again on the nose. I think most breeders will steer you in the right direction if you tell them the price range you're looking at. The sale cattle look great & I'm sure it will be an impresive sale.

When I go to a sale to buy on a tight budget (which is more often than not), I don't pick out the ones I like.  I pick out the ones I don't like - there is a difference.  There are always bargains in every sale and usually plenty of good (not perfect) cattle.  There might be 20% of the animals I really like and 20% I don't want no matter what price.  The other 60% are probably just fine - especially considering you don't really know which cows will have the best calves.

Be prepared to jump on the first one you can afford that don't dislike.

Ok, now to answer what you actually want to know, just from looking at the pictures my top 4 are 7, 25, 26, it would then be a toss up between 16 and 20, I can also guarantee you that you will not get any of these 4 bought for 2500, I would be shocked if any of these go under 10,000.  Good luck and let us know if you get one bought.

You asked for advice.  I don't know if I can give you advice, but I'll give my opinion.  I agree with Jill, that the good calves will sell well above $2500.  It will take you quite a bit more time, but if you will shop around with heifer producers, you can find a $10,000 "Sale" calf for $2500 in the pasture.  Circle F, Buck & Hartman have terrific sales; lots of hype.  With this comes enormous prices for the best calves, and way too much for the rest.
