I have a replacement heifer that I weaned many months ago. Recently I put her in with a group of cows. There is one cow that she will still suck on. Do to lack of pens I don't have a way to split then up. Is there something I can put on the cows teats that tastes bad that won't hurt either of then. Thanks for any help!

.We had the same problem with a weaned calf. We bought a nose plate that hooks in the nose like a temporary bull ring. It prevented her from sucking. The kids said she was wearing a licence to NOT drink (it looks like a licence plate).  ;)

When we weaned our dairy bull calves from bottles we'd have a few stubborn ones that would suck on pen mates navals.  Don't know what it's called, but we put in a plastic orange ring that clips in their nose, nothing permanent as it doesn't puncture through the nose.  It has sharp plastic barbs on the end that made the calf that was getting sucked on get the .... outta there.  I'm pretty sure it would have the same effect.

We had this problem a few years ago with my old show heifer..We bought a nose ring with spikes on it so she would get kicked every time she would try and suck that cow....It broke her of that habit real fast!

Quiet weans are what we use to wean our calves now. Plastic clips that go in the nose like a ring but not permanent. A flap prevents the calf from sucking.

That is VERY similar to what we used, but our was metal. And you can buy just one! We got ours at Race Brothers, but I bet any farm store would have one.

Here is another type: http://www.enasco.com/product/C17687N
