I have a July Bull calf that I feel could make a nice bull. But i am wondering if he would be marketable as a bull being that he is only a July calf or should just band him? I really appreciate everyone's opinions.

you could sell him to a fall calving herd and he would have a little more growth and maturity over the fall yearlings. or, you could hold him over and sell him next spring as a coming two yr old and he will be able to cover several cows. the down side is you have to wait longer to turn any profit off of him whereas he could bring $1000-$1200 as a steer in august or sept.

The first thing I see is "why was he born in July?"  Are you a spring calver and it took the dam several services  natural or AI to get bred?  If this was the case, then no I wouldnt call him bull material. Fertility is a big deal for me and most bull customers.

If the calf is any good, a July is as good as a January,  birth date will throw off when you can use him, but that's about it.
Next thought, will not be many if any July calves in the show ring, have seen a lot of bulls get on a roll and get traded for some decent dollars.  Look at the calf, not the calendar.

Here is our best, and 2nd best July bull calves.  Taking into account time of year born, pedigree, and looks- both were decided upon not being good enough not to cut.  This is pretty typical of the Gates bull calves, and so we decided to make more, born a different time.

Due to picture size, the 2nd best July bull calf, and the above calf as a baby...
