I've got a really nice Here I Am steer that when we got was just plain crazy. Super distrustful of people, would climb the walls to get away, about as nervous a calf you could. I've put a lot of work and time into him, he's not perfect yet, but I can lead him pretty well now, he'll lick your hands and coat and wont run away from you anymore. Still got that high headed, watchful attitude but every day he's getting better.

Recently though my biggest problem with him has been kicking. He's always been a kicker but it seems to be getting worse and worse, when i work around him in his pen spreading bedding or moving them he'll take random swings at me. Won't kick at the hose or water, but will take pretty hard kicks at the blower. I blow his back legs at a distance and don't stop blowing them till he's stopped kicking, but he doesn't seem to be getting any better. It's difficult working around his back side, so I was wondering if people have any routines or tips to get calves out of this. I've seen people say to kick the steer back or hit them, but i'm worried that will set him backwards and make him fearful of people again. Never had a calf that kicks before so unsure what to do.

Take a plastic leaf rake (small head) and scratch him all over with it, start on his back and work your way all over, they tend to like it and it desentizieses them to touch. If he does kick it does not hurt the rake and you are out of range.
Get some Glucoat, and fat supplement, and start him on it, i do not know why but it helps with calves that are like yours, we had a calk that was like yours and Dave Guyer suggested we try the glu-coat, it took about 2 weeks but there was a noticeable change in the animal, you could not blow or rinse him from the front shoulders forward, he would lose his mind, after putting him on the glucoat for a few weeks, he just stopped. Here I Am's will benefit from the fat supplement any way so you kill 2 birds with one stone.
