New Donor Cows

We've acquired 2 new donor cows this fall from my Parents herd that I intend to flush in the spring/winter.  Looking for some marketable suggestions for Angus specifically but open to other ideas.
Cow#1 - N7's Mary KT 30Y: Sire SAV Net Worth, Maternal Grandsire N Bar Emulation EXT
              She's as powerful as you can make an angus. Docility is her downfall.  Manageable and has been shown plenty but certainly
              not a pet.  Successful past matings to Shipwheel Montana(S Chisum), Burns Blaster(MOGCK Bullseye), SAV Pioneer. SAV
              Resource didn't click as well on her as most of our other cows.  Too much power.
Cow#2 - N7's Mary KT 12W: Sire TC Stout 407 (TC Freedom), Maternal Grandsire Boyd Beefmaker (Future Direction)
              In my opinion she profiles as the ideal angus cow, just maybe 1 size bigger than necessary.  Perfect feet and udder.  Good
              docility, and more than adequate thickness.

Your #2 cow depending on what you want them for I have a donor cow that is similar to build as yours and had an ai calf out of ha cowboy up and that little Geiger has impressed me a lot came at about 75 pounds and at 3 months old is getting thicker everyday

Ya Cowboy Up is intriguing on a cow like her.  He's maybe a little loose in his structure but I bet he'd work on her. I'm curious just how big his daughters will get.

When I say marketable I want one of two things:
1. Embryo matings that will sell to breeders. Whether that be for show cattle or otherwise but not embryos that I would implant for my own use. In this case breed isn't a factor.
2. Embryos that will be useful to me building a herd to market bulls to commercial customers.  Productive daughters, masculine bulls, muscle, pounds, fleshing ability, you name it.  No crazy outliers for performance or calving ease and no "show stuff" (low scrotal, low docility). Angus only.

Since I don't know the EPDs or the type of calves out or what specific bulls were used here.  It is hard to be really specific.  I don't want to give up any performance or power they have to get more maternal or growth if needed.  I am thinking of using bulls with a record of doing well on SAV influence cattle and I think Peak Dot has three bulls worth looking for both cows that meet the bill.

Mark - We must think a lot alike.  We used Blaster (a brother to No Doubt) and Peak Dot Jump Start (son of Easy Decision) this spring so I will have a good idea how those matings turned out in February.  Unanimous is still on my short list to use, I just haven't got to him yet.  I think he'd mate up with the Net Worth cow pretty darn nice.  Easy Decision or his sons would click best with the 12W cow if I had to guess.

As for EPDs both cows have a strong set of balanced numbers so I'm not concerned with pushing numbers in either direction.  312W has a bit more BW but more performance, 30Y is more balanced across the board.  Keep in mind these are both big cows.  Like pushing 1900lbs big. 30Y isn't big framed but crazy long, deep, and thick. 12W has more frame.

So we flushed 12W to EF Titan 545 successfully.  Implanted 7, put 4 in the tank and sent 10 to Australia.  Pretty happy with the results and based on the Titan calves I have it should work very well.

Now we are planning to flush the other cow 30Y this fall. She's a Net Worth x EXT that is built like a tank.  Probably should look to add a bit of calving ease and length to her.  Breed average scrotal and docility are a must.  Everything else is negotiable.  What do you guys think would work on her? Nyk -- if you want to bump carcass EPDs without losing functionality, might look at Baldridge Colonel and BUBS Southern Charm.

Colonel looks interesting.  I like a lot about him and adding hoover dam in there is intriguing.  Not sure I can get him in Canada.  Southern Charm looks like he would have worked better on the 12w than the 30y cow.

Horse Butte 6141 would certainly make cows and I wouldn't hesitate to use a bull like that for western range cows.  You can always hop them up with more terminal genetics if retaining ownership of calves and feeding them out.

Yup.  Good Charolais bulls can be used over these maternal British cows to get the power back that’s inherently lost when selecting for fertility.

I get what you're saying XBAR.  That bull pictured looks to have atrocious back wheels but I see the point.  12W mated up really well with Resource (son pic below) who carries some pretty potent Rito lineage so I could see her working on some of these smaller framed maternal genetics really well.  I'm not sure some of those would fit my market in Manitoba but I bet they would make her genetics more palatable to people running smaller cows.

I don't think most are any smaller framed than those youre posting-- the females carry a much slighter physique but I remember reading where LL said most of the Shoshone cows were over 1500lbs.  Most importantly, I think their ability to rapdily inject sexual dimorphism into a population is their biggest strength.

That's kind of my point.  Those slighter physique types don't fit my market very well. Part of that is environmental.  We spend 6 months of the year below freezing basically and 4 months of that at close to 20 below celsius. Really small cows don't hold up great (neither do huge cows but that's a different strory). The other part is due to my market competition.  Most cattle in Manitoba are exotics - simmental and charolais predominantly. Heavy boned, larger frame, and big weaning weights are the norm and the goal for most commercial guys.  I try to straddle the fence between the maternal and the performance cattle but I certainly can tell you my favorite calves are rarely the first ones sold when commercial cattlemen show up to look at them. The biggest ones always sell first and for the most money.

2 cows off to the ET center today.  New pic of N7's Mary KT 30Y and her full sister, N7's Net Mary KT 9X.  Still trying to decide on bulls. Other than docility neither need much improvement in my opinion.  9X has really clicked with Sitz Upward sons and bulls of that type (more frame and growth).
