New RA Genetic defect rules

To RA breeders: What do you think of the new genetic defect rules? Far enough? Too far?
Plus, pretty neat flier they sent out too!!!

The slick flier got my attention. Makes one wonder if a big breeder got burned? If so then they (ARA) will be serious. Otherwise..??

I hope that the attitude among associations is changing, maybe slowly, about true damaging genetic defects. In the ARA we track everything even remotely tied to economic relevance, why not genetic defects too?

What are the rules? What did the flyer say? Does anyone think canyon is a carrier? Or do we need to look deeper into the two official carriers pedigrees. If it is like the shorthorn and maine deal...it will probably take a year or so for the Red Angus breeders to collectively get a grasp on the situation. If there were any red angus bloodlines used in gelbvieh,limi,simmental,shorthorn or other breeds....what are the odds of marble bone being in these breeds now? Just food for thought.

Here are the Rules and Regs from the ARA and, also, their latest rule changees as of June '08.  The Rules pertaining to registration requirements incuding genetic monitoring and reporting is all in Sec. C of the Rules and Regs.

I wonder if there is a phenotype that goes with marble bone. For instance...you can tell a th calf carrier by his hair and straiter back legs and he has the look. I wonder if such a deal exists with the marble bone. I know in the 1950's they did experiments with herfords to see if you could i.d. a dwarfism carrier by just looking at cattle and no one could.

The thing that caught my attention is the fact that when you sell a registered red angus, you, as a seller are guaranteeing them to be defect free, and to have a defect free calf (if selling bred). If the animal is found to be a carrier down the road, you, as a seller, are REQUIRED to either replace the animal, or refund their money. That means if I sell a heifer today and it turns out she is a carrier next year (please keep in mind - no genetic test yet) I MUST refund or replace.

Just wandered what everything thought.....pretty strong stance compared to other breeds and genetic defects...

If I buy a heifer today (no test available) and it later turns out to be a carrier, nothing says I have to go for the refund. But it show the integrity the ARA is trying to instill in the breed.

More importantly and pressing, if I were a big seed stock breeder I would be in Denton, TX personally overseeing the development of that test! JMHO

I think it is great! An association stepping up to the plate aggressively despite the politics and $ involved. The ANgus could take a lesson from the RA or for that matter the Holstein Association

I agree....and I have heard many breeders in a flat panic over this defect and the bloodlines "involved".....

Makes ya become an "expert" in pedigrees in a hurry!!!

aj - since some of these marble bone calves are aborted - they may be missed, but more likely to miss if you aren't looking or are an ostrich - I am sure that someone in theU S has seen marble bone calves

There are several groups working on identifying the defective gene, but of course you must have samples - with 3 bulls id'ed as carriers it should be relatively easy to get an informed pedigree, esp if there were father-daughter matings from the ABS bull that was pulled (who is the full brother to one of the id'ed defect carriers.

I am staying away from anything with  Buf Crk CHF 824-1658 as he is obviously in all 3 carriers - doesn't mean he is the dirty doer, but seems prudent to avoid his genetics until the mutation is found and the test available. Take a look at the Brylor Catalog - I am using Mulberry and Master Plan - go north for your RA semen!

And, ask the hard questions to the breeder and dealer of the bull you are interested in.....if in doubt, leave them out!!!
(Ok, that is what I am doing....you all can do what you want!!)  ;D

DL - your advice on Brylor is very insightful. Goes back to Rambo 502 great bull. The Canadians have a slightly larger red gene pool mainly because they allow the registration of both black & red in one association. This allows commingling which has it's benefits.

aj - FYI another RA bull has been confirmed as a marble bone carrier - BUF CRK MAJOR R057 ( 1049988 ) - work your pedigree magic on him.....will it end the same way?? the plot thickens
