My 11 yr old dtr is asking for a Nook color for Christmas. What can anyone tell about the good, bad & ugly about them? Any help is appreciated. I know nothing about them.

I can tell you a whole lot, but I know amazon just released several new kindle models.  It is something you might look into unless she is dead set on the nook.

There are different levels of the nook and kindle, from black and white with no touch screen, all the way to basically a tablet computer.  Also you can get them with or without 3g.  The 3g service allows you to download books where you do not have wifi available.  The 3g is completely free, but you do pay a premium to get a 3g model.

Buy an iPhone or iPad and be done with it. The Kindle or Nook apps are free to read books on them.

Yea, I kinda refuse to buy my 11 yr old a cell phone. The main thing she is wanting it for is the books. If it has some apps on it , then I guess that's an added bonus. Just trying to hear the opinions on the different things out there.

My 17 year old son loves his nook color.  Has had it since last chrismas.  He reads it all the time,  even at cattle shows, no trouble with it so far.  He has an ipod also, it is much nicer to read the larger screens.  The Ipad would be tempting to me, but I let him choose.

Managing the account when the youngster needs to "borrow" your credit card number to get it started, takes a little comunication and monitoring.  I've had no trouble and "nook cards" like Itunes cards, are widely available, to manage the amount spent.

I do not know how the kindle fire compares.  Also, of course, make sure it doesn't go to school where all such toys seem to disapear, but I'm sure your are aware of that...

My wife has one and she really likes it.  It is very inexpensive to down load books.  We have a nine year old and a 5 year old and they both really enjoy the nook.  I do not know how but I know you can down load a ton of aps and watch movies and shows on netflix on the nook.  My 5 year old loves to have books read to her by the Nook. We are thinking about getting each of them their own for Christmas but are going to look into the Kindle.  My son has an ipod and a ds and a lot of the time he prefers the nook.

Don't know alot about the Nook. I got a Kindle for Christmas last year and love it.  It isn't color or touch screen, but both features would be nice.  I'm always trying to turn the page by swiping my finger across the screen ::).  Lots of books available for less than $4 (many for free).

A friend of mine had a Nook color and didn't like it. She said the color screen was hard on her eyes. She went back to using the black and white screen.

We got one for my 7 yr. old back in July and she has no problems using it . The books are much cheaper to download than buying a book.

I am getting an Android Tablet 7" for Christmas Real Cheap on Amazon. I pretty sure you can get books on it at the app store. Or they have a kindle for 79.00 on Amazon.com
Good Luck!
