Again you are bringing back some memories. When Red Alert was campaigned, he was considered to be " near perfect".  I remember that a group that were syndicating him, tried their best to get me to throw $5000 for a share. I didn't do it, and am glad I didn't. When I look at pictures from this era, I really wonder what everyone was thinking about. Most of the hype was started by the college gurus, who kept telling cattle producers that big was where it was at, and we had to get there as fast as we could. I am surprised anyone survived raising cattle like this. This just goes to prove that we all should be careful who we listen too.

The same thing they were smoking in the 2000's, when the people 25 years from NOW look at our current trends......however, I CAN remember using RAMBO on little Angus cow to make steers.....not bad for the times!

here's my favorite show pic of all time.

it was on the cover of the feb 87 angus journal.

i like the professionalism, the loose lead shank, the level head (side to side), the ears forward.

probably our best cow ever was a KA Rambo x PB small framed Angus who went on to Kerry Lawrence's program. I would like to have a few more of her around. She died post calving this spring at the age of 13-14. Kept a lot of GOOD daughters from her.

I had some Wild Turkey semen in the tank until about a year ago!  Those cattle look funny now, don't they??

This first pic is of the first Simmental heifer we ever had that won anything. She was a division winner at Denver, Louisville, Houston and Jackson. Then the next is her first calf a 78 pound bw, 1035 pound actual 205 day wt and a 1620 pound actual 365 day wt bull and a 10+ frame if there ever was one.  He won everything and we thought he could win Denver. Took him to a bull stud for a weekend to collect semen so we would have some to sell at Denver and they let him die from bloat. They look ridiculous now. I do miss the emphasis on performance of those days, however.

I can remember in probably 1994 or 95 hearing that they used a 52" steer to win a MAJOR SHOW in Texas and that was UNHEARD OF...... to use a midget that small..........LITTLE DID WE KNOW!!!!! (no punt intended)lol

the Simmental heifer was by Triumph, but she was all Kintyre breeding as are most of those you mentioned. That's Knick Overpeck holding her and John Edwards, who is still judging, behind her. Then her calf is out of R&R The Wizard which was Steve Reimer's and later Hudson Pines. That's Doug Parke holding him. Since Doug is vertically challenged he looks even taller  They really look ridiculous, but you have to remember just how short the cattle were when these began to be fashionable.

ultrasound at the show.

the recognition that two types of steers can win a fat show as the animals excelling for the lean carcass is finally recognized.

Gonewest - Nick Overpeck, now there's a legend. If he was still alive...Well everyone watch out because he was perhaps the original Steer Jockey and really good at it. I drove by were he grew up a few years ago a got goose bumps. He had a nice blue roan that won the Royal about 40 years ago if anyone is old enough to remember.

Knabe - ZNT Triple X, black purebred,  has all those bulls in his pedigree ( Mr. T, Rambo, Smithbuilt and Red Alert ). He's a proven calving ease bull and semen is available.

Some registered Angus were sold that had Rambo in their pedigree. Some even became famous and their genetics are still popular in the club calf world today, according to rumors.

Total Power was one of the forefathers of the club calf industry.....Total Power..... sired Total Play.......sired DeBull......sired Heat Seeker........etc.

I can remember staring at those Black Champ ads with ALL their bulls on that page....Black Power, Polled Power, Total Power.......and more that I can't remember!
