Old School Maines

Today I picked up the Maine Anjou voice from March 1997. I saw a few bulls that I really liked. I saw stud muffin and I was impressed with him. I also so a bull called LFC Mint(JP Mr.Boomer x LFC Honky Tonk) and a bull call Stalker(Polled Pirsuit x smith built). Any opinions on them? I also saw a bulled called Doc(Pulled Pursuit x streamliner).

What kind of Cows does Polleroid work good on?

I really like chill factor and have a couple PHAF Irish whiskey females bred to him for this srping and have some more semen in the tank. I also have a cane of Witch Dr. that I dont know what to do with. I have one cow I will be breeding him to next year

Polleroid was a really big bull who sired pretty big calves who became cows probably too big for most people today - Polleroid sired cows were deep, easy fleshing, big boned and big footed and correct - they looked good but were not high on maternal traits and +/- in fertility

Doc never collected

Mint was heavily promoted and never really took off

Chill Factor is a really good bull esp on Angus females

Stalker did well in the show ring - can't remember exactly what he did - but didn't really leave a legacy of any sort

The Witch Doctor - hard to go wrong with that bull - one of the few bull triathletes in the breed

The Mint's I seen way back when didn't impress me.  Seemed like they just didn't have depth needed, and the cows weren't the greatest milkers

I really liked the looks of Stud Muffin when he came out, we never used him because I never heard or saw anything decent out of him.

JIT and I owned a cunia fullblood cow that we showed to reserve champion maine at Agribition a few years back. We bred her to Border Creek Future and have an outstanding yearling @ JIT's place. Those Cunias were nice females.

According to Brent Langman, Stalker's were just too framey, but seemed to work best on small framed Angus cows.

I always liked the Epinal genetics and thought he had few problems. They appeared only average in muscle and bone but had some functional value.

There was also quite a few great Maine cows that were imported that we often forget about.

The Cunia x Dalton x Bysantin crosses often times show up in Black Maine show cattle. PC Metric 707 is one of my all time favorite foundation bulls.

When talking about Old School Maines, I think there is a Bull which has not yet been mentioned, but I would guess to show up in the pedigree of many of what are considered to be the best Bulls and Cows of the Maine-Anjou breed.

We had a couple of cows which were just outstanding.  As far as producing way better than average show calves (cows & Bulls), these cows clicked no matter what the sire.  One was a 1988 model sired by Ferris Rch Strutt; the other a 1993 model sired by FR Magic 179X.  Coincidentally, both of these cows showed two generations back the bull  AA BLACK GOLD 500.  I suspect that if we get to looking, we can find Black Gold in many a great Maine.

AAOK - I'll have to agree with you about AA Black Gold 500. Probably the most influential Cunia derivative in Black Maine genetics.

I don't think you can go wrong with Habanero.  He's not as old as some of the other bulls listed, but his daughters are some of our best cows, and he has several sons that are leaving their mark.

The Daines did a great job of promoting DJ Ceasar, which caused quite a run on his offspring for a couple of years.  Some calves demanded really huge prices at the time.  I saw a few of his high selling bulls, and several heifers, but never saw one I would call better than average.  His popularity crashed in a hurry.

We absolutly loved using Ceasar...but we hated the cert. fee.  For that reason we never bought anymore of his semen.

The calves I had from Caesar were nice too.  Seems I've always liked Magic bred cattle.  Witch Doctor seems popular.  If you are looking for semen on some older black bulls, I have semen on two from bloodlines that seemed to be popular a full sib to Stout, "JD" 238688 and K&K's Avalanche 47G 273154 .  Both bulls make calves grow.  The udders on Avalanche cattle are very well structured, typical of Midas breeding.  I'd part with each at a reasonable price depending on the no. of units you wanted.  (Say in the $20 range).  I have 60 some units of Avalanche and maybe 20 of JD.  I also have some semen on Dained Electric and a black polled bull out of a Caesar grandson that I raised, 333968.

i've been drifting away from breeding black maines that didn't come from a fullblood x angus foundation.  Trying to create that new black outcross line you know.

You do not find better cow families than the one DL mentioned.  As far as old % bulls that I would consider now for that price Pistol Pete and Witchdoctor are options, but why go backwards when there are much better bulls out there today?
